Wines At-a-Glance (full details and tasting notes, below)
Ariane Pinot Noir (2021 92pts, 2022 93pts, $38 SRP) is 100% whole cluster fermented,
Colette Pinot Noir (2021 91pts, 2022 93pts $38 SRP) is 100% destemmed, and
Marie-Paule Pinot Noir (2021 92pts, 2022 93pts $38 SRP) is a cuvée (blend) of both styles.
Reserve Marie-Paule Pinot Noir (2021 93pts./Editors’ Choice $55 SRP, 2022 96pts/Editor’s Choice $75 SRP) is a selection of our 5 favorite barrels, 40% whole cluster/60% destemmed.
Nicolette blanc-de-noir (white) Pinot (2023 not yet reviewed, $28 SRP) is picked early and pops with citrus and white flower notes, with wet-stone minerality.
J Marie Chardonnay (2023 not yet reviewed $38 SRP – in this double blind tasting, the 2022 ranked 1st, ahead of a GC Chablis, among others!) also from a single vineyard, Royer, Eola-Amity Hills. This chardonnay features neutral oak élevage, showing elegance, grace and great aromatics followed by bright flavors with body, a hint of creaminess and struck-flint minerality.
I also produce two award-winning Pinot Noir-based, small-batch Vermouths (94pts/Editors’ Choice & 91pts), and four authentic-style, bottle carbonated sparkling Ciders . Sun Break Vermouths are made from red and rosé Pinot Noir infused with 17 (rosé) to 20 (red) organic and no-spray botanical infusions. These are crafted to be enjoyed on their own, chilled, as apéritif wines; and of course, they shine in cocktails. Sun Break Sparkling Cider is crafted using heritage/heirloom apples for aromatic, complex and food-friendly dry ciders. Heirloom cider apples have higher natural sugar/ABV, tannins and tartness. The cider is bottle-conditioned similar to a sparkling wine/Méthode Champenoise but without disgorgement for extended in-bottle lees contact.
Who we are/Wine Making Summary After 3 years ITT, I started Sun Break in 2018 at @Vincent_Fritzsche’s winery alongside @Saul_Mutchnick (Vincent Wine Co. and Championship Bottle, respectively). Great people, great wine makers—what a kick that was! I am now making wine at the Björnson Vineyard Collective. In a nutshell, I follow an estate-type model for Pinot from the Cortell-Rose Vineyard using all 6 clones/blocks exploring three distinct expressions of terroir. I love having access to all six blocks/clones from the vineyard. The wines show more depth and complexity as we add more clonal diversity: some clones (at this site) bring more tannin, robustness and black fruit (Dijon 114 and 115), or bright red fruit (667 and 777), or midpalate texture and darker red fruit (Pommard), or acidity (Wadensvil), etc. Here’s a quick summary of the wines. Full TNs, ABVs, etc., are below or on the website.
A key point is that I produce three styles of Pinot Noir from the same vineyard and that makes an interesting and educational tasting experience. The Colette is 100% destem and more elegant and fruit focused, the Ariane is 100% whole cluster with more body, spice and tannin with great fruit and floral (rose) notes, and the Marie-Paule is a cuvee/blend of the two. The Reserve is a selection of our best barrels.
Two Pinot Vintages Offered: Which to Choose? Our 2021 Pinot Noir vintage has more color, extraction and intensity than the more elegant and refined 2022 vintage. The extra year of bottle age on the 2021s gives this vintage an advantage over 2022 IMO, but they are very different stylistically and the 2022’s received higher acclaim from wine writers (93pts for each and 96pts for the Reserve).
The whites are bright, aromatic, complex, and show minerality without reduction. Picked as early as possible for acidity, on the lees for complexity and body (lees stirring to build body, lower reductive notes), and neutral oak barrels to highlight the fruit.
Both vineyards are dry-farmed with no herbicides, no synthetic fertilizers, insecticides, or fungicides.
We are a One Percent for the Planet winery, donating one percent of all sales to West Coast forest conservation projects.
The French names of my wines are an homage to my family. I spent most summers on the family farm in the Rhone Valley as a youth, two years of Lycée in France, and many family visits thereafter. These nurtured my love of exceptional food and craft wine, especially for Burgundy, Rhone reds, Champagne and Chartreuse, to name a few.

2023 Nicolette White Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley (not yet reviewed). Our white Pinot Noir (Blanc de Noir) is crafted in a bright and crisp style. A delicious, highly aromatic and refreshing wine, Nicolette pops with struck flint minerality, citrus flavors and floral notes. Like our other wines, Nicolette is made from hand-picked Pinot Noir, but the grapes are harvested very early in the fruit’s ripening arc. 12.7% ABV $28 SRP/$19.60/$16.80 sale prices
2023 J Marie Chardonnay, Royer Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley (not yet reviewed). This chardonnay focuses on bright acidity and minerality, complemented by well-balanced body and texture. The wine’s aromatics and flavors burst with notes of citrus, tropical fruit, white flowers, and a subtle hint of minerality. (This is NOT a butter/caramel/new oak-styled Chardonnay! See this double blind tasting where we come ahead of a Chablis GC, among others.) 12.1% ABV $38 SRP/$26.60/$22.80 sale prices
2021 Colette Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley. Colette is the most fruit-driven of the three Pinot Noirs we produce. 91 pts. International Wine Report: “100% destemmed during fermentation and in neutral French oak barrels for 11 months, the 2021 Colette Pinot Noir from Sun Break is a juicy, fruit-forward, and delicious wine. Boasting notes of macerated red cherry, pomegranate seeds, dried sage, wet earth, and a hint of anise seed. Acidity checks in on the high side, while tannins are crunchy but starting to integrate.” Drink: 2023-2031 13.5% ABV $38 SRP/$26.60/$22.80 sale prices
2022 Colette Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills. 93pts (IWR - International Wine Report): “Scrumptious notes of crushed blueberries, red plum skin, sweet Blood orange pulp, lemon zest, and shades of wet earth are all present and beautifully combined. With a lovely finish with nicely present tannins and lemony acidity, I loved the candied rose petal note I got on the back of the palate.” $38 13.3% ABV Drink: 2024-2030 $38 SRP/$26.60/$22.80 sale prices
2021 Ariane Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley. 92 points (IWR): “Fermented with 100% whole cluster and all neutral oak, which gives it a more earthy, structured, and savory style compared to the others in the lineup. Boasting a medium ruby/orange core with a silvery rim in the glass, it offers up aromas of spiced red plum, crushed pink peppercorn, sweet clove, and Blood orange tones. Crunchy sweet tannins, a medium body, and mouthwatering acidity complete this fabulous Pinot Noir that should age nicely in your cellar for the next decade.” Drink: 2023-2033 12.9% ABV $38 SRP/$26.60/$22.80 sale prices
2022 Ariane Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills. 93pts (IWR): “A phenomenal nose of bright Bing cherries, raspberries, red rose petals, sweet herbs, and orange zest spills from the glass while the palate is a touch more savory in nature with more earth and forest herb tones shining through. Crunchy tannins and medium plus acidity complete the wine.” 12.8% ABV Drink: 2024-2032. $38 SRP/$26.60/$22.80 sale prices

Balanced and fresh acidity pairs perfectly with the rounded sweet tannins and lengthy fruit-forward finish. It finishes just a touch more elegant and balanced than its siblings, which makes it my favorite of the lineup.” Drink: 2023-2031. IWR, 1/11/2023 Made from 30% whole cluster and 70% destemmed fermentations. 13.2% ABV $38 SRP/$26.60/$22.80 sale prices

The nose is full of wild huckleberry, red cherry, toasted pine nuts, pink rose petals, and hints of a dusty country road. On the palate, flavors of black cherry and pomegranate juice are prominent. This wine has medium to high acidity levels, crunchy tannins, and a medium body and was fermented with 40% whole cluster and aged for 11 months in neutral oak barrels, which provides a complex and interesting flavor profile.” Drink: 2023-2031.
