Scott, I have not but will track some down or just stop in my next trip through which should be soon. Which one do you like the best?
I did see that Pisgah makes a Bentons Bacon Stout not sure how I would like it in beer but Bentons Bacon is the best I have ever had.
I really like Mother Earth’s Endless River & Dark Cloud.
Also a big fan of the Highland Cold Mountain Winter Ale which is what I have been drinking a lot now.
If you are ever in the Greensboro area make a stop at Bestway Grocery to see the wall of beer.
However, just tried the Barrel Aged Rasputin the other day. Was not impressed, especially at $22 a bottle. Got very little of the bourbon flavor out of it, no vanilla at all. Dry with no creamy mouth feel. I would recommend that folks stay away from this one.
Last time I was at Pisgah I have a few great ones. Their pale Ale is nice, their tripel is epic. They had a Valdez coffee stout that was wonderful…it is currently on tap there. That bacon stout sure does sound crazy!!
I forgot to say but my stout experiment turned out well. The dry stout was good on its own, the one aged on blueberries was great but not a ton of blueberry flavor, the bourbon barrel one was my favorite and turned out as well as a commercial bourbon aged beer, the vanilla/cinnamon one tasted like a candle…I’ll let those age some but doubt it will get better, the coffee stout was loved by those that drank it but I am not a coffee fan so I just took a few sips, and the mint chocolate had a bare hint of chocolate but the mint came out great in scent and taste.
All in all it was a success. I will be doing this again with my next dry stout!
Had a couple Big John stouts the other night – a 2012 (just bottled a couple weeks prior) and a 2011.
The bottle with age was much smoother. The 2012 tasted like it had Hershey’s syrup squirted in the bottle, whereas the other has far more complexity and the flavors were better integrated.
Yowza!! At that price point, one can track down a Harviestoun Ola Dubh 12, 16, 18, 30, or 40, and have some money left-over. And I can all but guarantee that the Harviestoun will not disappoint.
Drinking Half Acre’s Big Hugs (coffee stout) out of a 32 oz growler filled on Sunday (opened today) and it is a bit flat (seal was not so good) nice coffee, not too thick or sweet maybe a bit boozy
It was mentioned on the previous page, but Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti is out now. I highly recommend it. I’m not big on the stouts like KBS or CBS or pretty much anything added to them. This one is unctuous and super pure.
Also, if you can find it, 21st Amendment Marooned on Hog Island is interesting and damn good.
Ballast Point is another one that is up there.
