A search didn’t reveal an answer to this one: How high have you, or would you recommend not exceeding, stacking Domain lay flat case boxes? Second question, I see that vinevault boxes have double thickness cardboard but they appear not to be available; anyone know a source? Thanks much in advance.
Try calling vine vault
I’ve stacked the domaine boxes to the ceiling in the past but wouldn’t recommend that; especially with high humidity they deform in shape over time. Now I have them stacked about 4 boxes high under a counter.
I think stocking them 5 or 6 would be fine.
I try to keep them under 7, but it will depend on your humidity situation, as well as the box stiffness/strength. My main concern is actually seismic.
Whenever I visit K&L, I get concerned about seeing so many bottles standing up. If there was another San Francisco earthquake like 1906 or 1989, many of the wines could get jostled or hurt.
I have Vine Vault boxes filled with 18+ bottles of Riesling and no dividers stacked about 6 high, but won’t go higher because the massive weight. I have BWC boxes which are substantially similar filled with standard 12 bottles and dividers stacked to the ceiling.
Vine Vault boxes are significantly more sturdy than Domaine. I’d try calling them for sure if you’re in a large stacking situation. You might also consider some variable height shelving which - when configured well - should allow you to stack only a couple boxes per shelf while losing out on minimal space. I’ve purchased tons from Costco (wine storage and other uses) … here’s an example: https://www.costco.com/trinity-ecostorage-5-tier-wire-shelving-rack-with-wheels-%2c-36%22-x-18%22-x-72%22-nsf%2c-chrome-color.product.11541206.html
They have tons of other footprint sizes of shelving as well that are similar — some larger, some smaller.
+1
Shelving is a solid idea. I use some for one of my offsite facilities with great success. Also makes accessing cases a lot easier.
Do note that while usually shelves have one weight capacity, if you put them on casters, there is another, usually less than without casters. If you don’t have a need to have movable shelves, do consider ones without casters for greater weight capacity.
I just went down and counted mine…I have 7 laying on top of eachother…no issues. There also is no logic to why 7!
Thanks all. This is an example of why this board is great; many folks out there have already dealt with problems or inquiries that come up. Much appreciated.
