Spring Mountain Sale of Elivette wines

Weird- they did do a drop of 2013 late last week so maybe they’re holding for future drops or sold out. My orders gone through but has not shipped yet. There were also magnums available on First Bottle as well.

What Zach said probably makes sense as this it what I received in a reply on Saturday afternoon of availability:

Spring Mountain Vineyard Red Blend Elivette Spring Mountain District Napa Valley 2017 - $30/btl
Spring Mountain Vineyard Red Blend Elivette Spring Mountain District Napa Valley 2013 - $36/btl
Spring Mountain Vineyard Red Blend Elivette Spring Mountain District Napa Valley 2011 - $30/btl
Spring Mountain Vineyard Red Blend Elivette Spring Mountain District Napa Valley 2006 - $40/btl
Spring Mountain Vineyard Red Blend Elivette Spring Mountain District Napa Valley 2004 - $40/btl
Spring Mountain Vineyard Red Blend Elivette Spring Mountain District Napa Valley 2004 (Half Bottle 375mL) - $23/btl (only 6 currently show available)

No magnums were mentioned, though I did not specifically ask.

Somebody up thread said they were told that shipments were coming in waves from the winery.

I was told the same but wasnt told when.

I sent an emailed to LastBottle about a week ago and received this-

“I apologize for the delay! Currently we have a high volume of orders, everyone is working overtime.
Normally, orders go out as soon as possible, this time around we also had a delay with inventory and we have a lot lot of weather holds being released.”

Received an email yesterday that wine has shipped, arriving tomorrow.

My small orders shipped this week from LB.

Anybody know what the production volumes were for Elivette each vintage? I found some references online for 1000-2000 cases/year depending on vintage. I’m just surprised that SMV blew out the wine on their site, then blew out the wine on LastBottle (multiple times) and there still seems like there must be pallets of cases left for some vintages. They must have been sitting on an ocean of this stuff.

This is what I got: Winery Information for Spring Mountain Vineyard

It doesnt really surprise me based on dtc pricing that they had a ton left over. 2011 had over 2000 cases, would it be a surprise if they had 500 left?

I’m just a bit shocked that they devoted such a significant portion of their yearly production to a bottling at a price point that didn’t sell. Vanity project?

Or the economics were super favorable

Makes you wonder what else is out there…

I think there are a lot of Elivettes out there to be cleared out. Most won’t be of interest to us here but some will be.

Opened the 2012 Elivette this evening. Nice nose. If it was blind, I could believe it is a Bordeaux. A slight hint of spice. Ready to drink now.

Update. Hopefully folks aren’t sick of the updates!

'04- Tertiary characteristics, but some notable fruit left for the age. More body and much more life left than the '05 (out of 750), even with the '04 out of .375. This seems to have aged well and in balance. I tend to prefer a little more fruit, so it had me thinking that the '04 would probably be really good to my taste from 750 or mag (from 375)

'05 - Fruit mostly gone with what’s left being red fruit/cherry, acidity more prominent. Seems out of balance. Maybe slightly better with an hour of air, but did not notice too much of a change. Still enjoyable. I prefer '09 and '10, which are in a great place and better balanced. (from 750)

'06 - There was odd note on nose and odd note on palate that seemed related. Maybe it was the “black tea” described on the SMV website. Still seems to be some fruit left. Didn’t dislike drinking it, but didn’t like it either. Did not change much or blow off after being open two hours. I don’t think it was a fault. Maybe something I’m not used to. Perfect cork. (from 375)

'09- Still needed an hour decant. Just in a great place. Fruit still prominent and noted the cola note stated on the SMV website. In great balance. Sublime. (from 750)

'10- Same assessment as '09. In a great place. (from 375)

'12 - Hour + decant. I did not get quite the same expressiveness or complexity as the '09 and '10. Enjoyable for sure, but, by comparison, thinking it might be better in a few years. (from 750)

'13 - Decanted, as for all of them. Much more tannic and much less fruit than expected after trying the '12 and '15. Was expecting something different after given my experience with '12 and '15. Really coming from a different place than '12 and '15. Maybe needs more time to balance out given the tannic presence. (from 750)

'15- Generally similar assessment as for the '12 (from 750)

‘16- bright fruit plus prominent oak, which is not fully integrated. The most “napa ” tasting vintage I have had. Fairly tannic, so will probably benefit from additional time. Delicious. Fruit seemed to fade after being open a few hours. Better in first couple hours. (From 750)

'18 - Double decanted and gave it a couple of hours. So tight and would not open up. closed down. Needs at least another five years. Really not ready. (from 750)

What about the 2014?

Made it through quite a few vintages but not the ‘14 yet. I don’t think I even have it at the house. Still at last bottle.

Haven’t waded into the ‘17 or ‘19 either yet, on the assumption they are too young. I have 3 of the older vintages in magnum only and don’t plan to readily open, but, at some point, I will probably have some notes on most of the vintages.

Anyone else have any experience with ‘14 to share with Timmy?

Opened a 2011 last night and it was really great after an hour of air. One of the better and more ready to go vintages of Elivette that I’ve had so far.

@timmy_roos the one '14 I’ve tried (also with about an hour of air) was still very closed off and backward. I’m gonna wait a few years before my next one, or give it a much longer time in the decanter.

2007 out of a 375.
My first of 14 bottles from assorted bottles bought between SMV and Last Bottle.
Really nice! Certainly ready to drink after a quick forced decant when the cork came apart on me and had to be pushed into the bottle.
Lots of plummy fruit, tannins fully resolved. Both interesting and delicious.
Would certainly buy again at $19 for a 375 if it ever popped back up on LB.

I’ve started to just Durand everything (any winery) more than 10 years from vintage date.

Agreed. With these bottles, I only use a Durand. I had a few solid corks, but after a few that flaked on me, why not use the Durand?
