It’s a shame that virtually every bottle at auction or other resale site will now be untouchable. Unless there’s provenance showing a purchase at release, everything is suspect because the new owners were in such a hurry to clear the cellar.
I lost a bunch due to shipping to Chicago in 95F weather a few weeks ago. Sad to waste nice wine.
Last week I had an unexpected phone call from Spring Mountain with an apology for the loss of the heat-damaged wines. Apparently the offer was supposed to only go out to club members (at least in the beginning), they had only two people to deal with the orders, and they were in the process of switching shipping companies. Not a good sign for how the new owners think of their customers.
I took 3 bottles of the 2013 (delivered in July) to a buddy’s summer party in New Hampshire.
They all loved it
Had a 2016 750ml last week with steaks. Splash decant, no formal notes, but we enjoyed it (14.5%, balanced and leans old world).
Oh boy, I’m on their text message mailing list now.
Maybe they can make it a blind tasting of cooked versus non-cooked wines of theirs. #educational
2015 mag from a heat exposed shipment. Of course the true extent of the exposure is unknown.
Based on my experience with this and a 2016 mag, neither of which had any obvious flaws and were still even a bit tight, I’ll be holding the 2017 for a few more years. YMMV.
This thread didn’t make the cut for the article:
Different winery, but I left a Chiron pinot in the trunk for several days a few months ago to where the cork protruded and there was moderate seepage.
I opened it a week ago and it was completely fine. I guess you never know from one bottle to the next. But at least we should all know to give it a chance, more than a small chance it might be sound.
I wonder if I’ll get my October ship now or if I’ll get some bottles and the rest refunded.
Looks like LastBottle just announced a large Elivette drop at the end of their coming marathon…large formats, library vintages, etc. They could have snagged a ton during the sale or could have negotiated an even better price for a huge lot/purchase…or it could be the bottles returned to SVV during the heat/shipping debacle. Any buyers?
I snagged some from SMV when they were blowing then out so don’t need any more. I’d be wary about the possibility of some heat returned ones slipping in there
Unfortunately I think Spring Mountain Vineyard has forever ruined the secondary market value of Elivette.
Popped a mag of ‘07 over the weekend and it was delicious.
You could always shoot them an email and ask them if these are confirmed to have NOT been shipped in summer heat and then returned
Last Bottle has a reputation to uphold. Blowing out cooked wine would ruin them. They have always been stand up great customer service in event wines are cooked or bad, and given refunds. Assuming great pricing, I wont hesitate if I see something I want.
Surely it’s unsold inventory from the sale.
I wonder how the prices will compare to what SMV offered.
Yes, I saw that, I think it is on August 23rd! I’m stoked!! I bet the prices will be even better than the winery sale!
