Sperino from Piedmont...know 'em?

Full disclosure: We hosted an event at the store tonight featuring Paoo di Marchi, gatekeeper of Isole e Olena, one of the great estates of Chianti and Tuscany.

They also own a Piedmontese property called Sperino…I had not heard of it until we planned this tasting. Tonight was my first sips of Uvaggio 2006 and Lessona 2005.

These Nebbiolo based wines are outrageously good. After about 2 hours of decanting the Lessona, it was pretty spectacular.

Anyone have experience with these wines?

I would also like to add that 2008 Isole e Olena Chard and 2001 Isole e Olena Vin Santo were excellent as well.

Guess not.

I’ve never heard of this estate, but their wines look interesting and they have a nice website:

with a lot of detailed info.

Dan, I have definitely had these wines via Moore Brothers in New Jersey. My only tasting note in CT is for the 07 Rose, which was very good. Paolo was supposed to make the trip to the Moore Brothers store tomorrow but it has been cancelled due to the snow, which is a major bummer as I’m a very big fan.

I am thrilled to hear about the 01 Vin Santo, as we’re cracking a bottle at an upcoming Italy tasting.

Paolo was a great guy for the event.

The snow storm looks ugly.

Looks interesting, who is the importer Dan?

Fleet Street (Sussex)

First tried these about 4-5 yrs ago at the urging of DarrellCorti. Frome the Lessona region of
the Piedmonte. I recall that the Uvaggio is a Neb/Bonarda blend. About $25. Quite tasty & rustic.
The Lessona is 100% Nebb and one of the best Nebbs I had, more along the lines of a Valtelline
Nebb (the ultimate compliment for any Nebbiolo) than those nasty Barolo/Barbaresco versions.
Think it’s around $60/btl…expensive, but not outrageously priced for what it is.

Full disclosure- I buy the Sperino and Isole E Olena wines.

I love the wines, but they are tough to drink with out ample decanting. The rose can be all over the place.
I prefer the Lessona to the Uvaggio, but again, it needs time.
