We will be staying just east of Grosseto, close to Scansano, in early June. We have lodging booked and are looking for some good day trips. I am pushing for a full day trip up to Montalcino. Other than that, I am hoping for recommendations on:
nearby wineries where we can do a tasting at a leisurely pace. Monteverro and Montauto are on my radar, but both are 50 minutes away. That is pushing it for a quick pop in visit.
an active outing…hiking, kayaking, pretty much anything to build an appetite
We will arrive in the area late on a Saturday. I am struggling to find any farmers markets before Wednesday. Any recommendations on a good place for fresh produce and other groceries would be a huge help.
Any coastal towns worth checking out. From the pictures I have seen, beaches are either sandy and absolutely packed with lounge chairs or rocky and pretty empty. I definitely don’t want a packed beach. Any smaller beaches in small towns that have a restaurant or two? One of my greatest travel experiences was in Sa Tuna in northern Spain where we found a small village with one or two restaurants and a beach that had maybe 20 people.
Any other favorites within a 90 minute drive. Cooking classes, tastings, invitations to your distant uncle’s private art collection and wine cellar, etc.
There is the Terne of Saturnian. Both a fancy spay and a (national park)? Where hit water comes out into on caclcite tubs.
Here’s a link, I was at the waterfalls.
Thank you for the responses. The hot springs are quite close and are definition our list.
We are debating a day in Siena or a day in Montalcino. We might be able to fit both in. My impression is that Siena, being larger, is better for art, architecture, and history. Montalcino would be more picturesque, maybe a bit more cliche-touristy but more unique. We will be getting a good dose of art and history in Rome before Tuscany so I am leaning toward Montalcino.
The Cascate del Mulino is wonderful. One of my best memories sitting under it rushing over my head. Also love the Etruscan ruins all over that area. Hiking from Sorano through via cava di san Sebastiano e necropoli was amazing. Pitigliano is worth a stop. There are also the White Whale hot spring with many fewer tourists. https://maps.app.goo.gl/fMU4CTLi2RhqQKR67
Cortona is worth a trip. Civita di Bagnoregio is worth a trip.
Orvieto is a must not miss visit. Go early and enjoy the day. Then stay until dinner and have some of the local favorites and don’t forget the Sangratino & Montefalco. Such a beautiful town.
Orvieto is a little over two hours from Grosseto. Doable but a very long day for a day trip. Double the distance from Grossetto as Siena is (which would be my “don’t miss” city if in that area, even though it’s crowded).
We enjoyed visiting here and is in the general area. It is an Antinori property (the smallest i believe) so it isn’t rustic and maybe a bit pretentious. I recall prices were a bit high as well. Still its a nice visit.
If you want something more rustic, i will have to fins the one closer to Pitigligiano. Morenof the country farmer, rustic wines, needs someone to interpret. Enjoyed this visit more but the wines not so much and definitely not the ones we brought back.
Definitely visit Pitigliano and Sovana . Also Saturnia for a spa day. Caino in Montemerano is a great restaurant with a super cellar, also Due Cippi in Saturnia
You can go to Castiglione della Pescaia for a day at the beach
