My husband and I are planning our next trip to Austria and would like to visit/stay in South Styria. Finding a wine guide or other similar knowledgeable person is turning out to be a challenge. Any recommendations of where to stay? Wineries to visit? Travel agencies or guides to work with?
Nice! A friend of mine has been in South Styria a while back and they really enjoyed the trip. He said its great to explore the area with the bike.
There are plenty of good Wineries to visit:
Tement
Sattlerhof
Gross
Erwin Sabathi
Lackner Tinnacher
Wohlmut
Neumeister (Südost Steiermark Vulkanland)
Famous producers in the „natural“ camp:
Andreas Tscheppe
Werlitsch
All producers from „Schmecke das Leben“ group - Sepp Muster, Tauss, Strohmeier)
I don‘t know if they all do accept visits, the first set of wineries does for sure. Maybe a little more tricky with the smaller „natural‘ ones. At some of the wineries you can also stay, f.e. At Tement they offer nice rooms.
You will taste a ton of great Sauvignon Blanc and Morillon (chardonnay)
If South Styria is your main stay (or you will spend some time there), don’t sleep you crossing the boarder(s) to perhaps stay a night or two. Slovenia can be a blink away (still Styria even), Croatia about an hour away. something you are considering? It’s the beautiful end of the alps scenery, many vineyards, most restaurants/ins are food is far to table as they always were.
These are all excellent recommendations. I would add Zweytick to the list, though.
Staying at Sattlerhof is a great option and they have a very good restaurant. Make sure to order some Sattlerhof Trinkaus, their best wine.
I also heard that staying at Tement is very nice and their restaurant Magnothek is very good, too.
For lunch, check out the many Buschenschank Restaurants, usually attached to a winery. Great options are Skoff and Zweytick. One of the best is Felberjörgl, but their wines are just ok. Still worth it, though.
Thank you all! We have 2 nights to spend there after attending the F1 race in Spielberg, so I won’t have enough time to cross the border, but will definitely have to make another trip to do so.
