South Carolina Resturant Scene

Charleston SC is on everyones list of great foodie cities to visit. Does anyone have advice regarding restaurants in the Greenville SC area. Will be spending some time there on a vacation/business trip. Your recommendation and comments would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Geno!

I live here in Greenville. Happy to answer questions if ya got em! It’s not quite as happening as Charleston, but we have some pretty good options. How long ya here and anything in particular you’re looking for?

We live in Brevard and usually are in Greenville for lunch.
We have tried the Kitchen Sink and loved it. Any other suggestions for lunch?

Visited Greenville a couple of times and loved it. I will let Matt suggest the right restaurants, but if you want a hotel recommendation, stay at the Grand Bohemian. The Westin is also very nice.

Easy from Brevard is Travelers Rest: Topsoil is the best in town there, but Upcountry Provisions is worth a lunch stop, as Tandem Creperie as well.

My personal favorite lunch in Greenville is Harry’s Hoagies, it’s just outside of downtown so it’s got its own parking which is nice, order in advance on the phone. Fork and Plow across the street is good too. My favorite downtown lunch spot is either Jones Oyster Co or Jianna (both good dinner choices too). The place we get lunch the most often on weekends is Swamp Rabbit Cafe (it’s also where we get most of our groceries). If you’ve got a group or are having trouble deciding, go to The Commons, a food hall on the Swamp rabbit trail and next to a nice park, probably 10 food options in there that are all good: burgers, tapas, tacos, south Asian, chocolate, bbq, plus a good wine bar and coffee spot.

For dinners, the places we end up taking people from out of town the most often at The Anchorage and Camp. The Anchorage is close to downtown but not quite, you probably wouldn’t walk to Main Street from it, but it’s very close. The group that owns the Anchorage also owns Mr Crisp, which has a little more seafood focus but is an easy reservation or walk in.

I’m from Orlando but have been up that way about a half dozen times to go cycling . I have stayed at the Hotel Domestique outside Travelr’s Rest or flown into Greenville and driven to friends’ homes in Brevard or Lake Toxaway. I agree with the Topsoil recommendation in Travelr’s Rest, it is quite good and unique. The Hotel Domestique has Restaurant 17 that is good and has a decent wine list. When passing through Traveler’s Rest, we always stop at Farmhouse Tacos for a good taco and a beer.

I have not spen a lot of time in Greenvile but we have gone for lunch a few times and it looks like a great town. I have had lunch at Passarelle Bistro which is basic French bistro food but it’s selling point is that it is at the Falls Park and is great for outdoor dining. I would recommend for lunch.

Let me know next time you’re up this way to ride! I’ve ridden from Domestique the last several weekends, it’s a really nice set of climbs going up from there into Saluda and back. You’re right, Restaurant 17 is a great spot

I would add though: there are better tacos in Greenville if you’re willing to head down from TR. basically any taco truck on White Horse Road near the grocery store La Unica, but more established places that we love are Birriera 101, Asada, or Comal 864

We usually come up in April for the Assault on the Carolinas out of Brevard but it was postponed this year due to fires. I am up in the air but may come up in September for the re-set. I am coming up for a wedding in late October and am staying at the Domestique for a couple days. I will hit you up though you will have to be nice to a flatlander in the hills. One of my riding buddies down here is the famed @Robert Alfert on this board. Perhaps I will drag him up sometime.

Had a very good Sun brunch at TopSoil last year. They had bluegrass quartet on the back deck. It was a great afternoon. Matt’s the source to go to here- agree with all he said. Anchorage has been very good past two visits. Jianna and Jones have both been good by me. Greenville is a fun visit. Especially when the weather is nice.

If you’re considering coming up in the fall, could always just consider coming up to ride in Hincape’s Gran Fondo. Last year was a little weird due to Helene, but there’s a new route this year with all the best climbs that looks pretty great.

I have always wanted to do the Gran Fondo but this year it is the weekend of the wedding that is bringing me to SC. Maybe next year. It looks like a great event.

Also live just outside of Greenville - and agree with most of the places mentioned. Our go to places - in no order - are the Anchorage, Topsoil, and Restaurant 17. We also like Camp, the Lazy Goat, Pomegranate on Main (Persian), and Jianna. For drinks at the bar, Northampton Wine - you can pick your own bottle from the floor to go with your nibbles. We like the Rabbit Hole for cocktails and Beneath the Trees at the Grand Bohemian has a nice brunch.

You won’t go hungry in the Upstate!

Another vote for Topsoil. Fantastic value with particular consideration to the wine pairings and overall menu

I also need some help… going to Pawley Island at the end of the month, anything good in that area?

We live in Pawleys and go to Perrone’s once a week.

It is the best place here hands down. They dry age their own salmon and only serve prime beef. Their steak tartar is world class.

Best wine list and cocktails are phenomenal also corkage friendly.
