Source of older Muscadet?

Anyone know where I can purchase Muscadet with at least 15 or more years of age? Im curious to see what they taste like.

Tough request. If there’s any store that could fit the bill, I would say Chambers Street Wines could.

Chambers street has occasionally shown such wines for sale. You might call and ask David Lillie to take your name should some show up again in the marketplace. But generally the knowledge that muscadet ages is still restricted enough so that there isn’t enough of a market to enable one to find these wines with age on them.

By the way, even Muscadets with 5-7 years start to show changes in the direction of mellowing and complexity that would allow you to buy, cellar and see what’s going on.

I’ll check it out, thanks.

I agree. I can actually buy random bottles of 5 year old Muscadet locally (that have languished on shelves) but these aren’t close to having any teriary development. At least the ones Ive tried.

K&L has had some libary releases from time to time. THat’s where I got this one. It’s quite a bit rounder. Very interesting.

1993 Domaine de la Louvetrie (Landron & Fils) Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Le Fief du Breil - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (3/11/2010)
This was nice and quite a bit different than other Muscadets I’ve had. Its age is betrayed by the honey color of the wine. There’s still a tanginess to the wine, but it is quite rounded, which Larry notes is to be expected with a 17-year-old wine. On the nose, I get lemon drops and some other candy. On the palate I get some minerality but more lime than lemon. Good finish but no as long as the Franken Silvaner that accompanied it. Aged Muscadet rocks.

Good advice above, especially about K&L’s occasional offerings. Or you could become friends with Sandy Crozier. She’s always trying out old Muscadets on me (knowing I don’t care for them). With 3 years or more of age, almost all of them lose the freshness and vibrancy that I love about young Muscadet.

two places listed on WS right now for 1995 that fits your criteria:

pierre luneau papin

^Jay Miller had that recently, said ‘oysters’ as a taste descriptor, but didn’t have oysters with it, wtf??? Read the tasting notes on CT, and also http://www.thewinedoctor.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Berry if you visit Marc Ollivier and you are very nice he might send you home with a bottle of 1988 Clos des Briords. [cheers.gif]

Otherwise get on Chambers Street Wines email list.

I’m not a fan of Landron’s style, too rich/over-ripe in when they pick the grapes…wine just doesn’t have anything close to what i associate with more ‘classic’ muscadet profile.

I had one of the K&L late releases from 2002 and it was medium dark yellow and way too rich for my palate, still good acidity, but just too rich overall. Would work for clam soups or mussels type seafood, not for fresh raw oysters.

You could get on both that & KL, but neither have them at the moment. I asked David about that last year, he said they didn’t have any, no news about getting any in the future.

Berry,

I apologize for the shill, but I have some Domaine Jean Aubron Grand Fief de l’Audigere Muscadet Sevre & Maine Sur Lie Vielles Vignes from 1997 & 2001, imported by our own Michel Abood’s Vinotas Selections.

I posted notes on them in CT. You can also search for them here in Wine Talk. The notes are honest, I don’t polish my TN’s for selling. In fact I had a flawed bottle of each on the first try.

Feel free to PM me for info if you’d like to make a purchase.
