Sort of TNs - '07 Pommards - Voillot Rugiens, de Montille Pezerolles

These are both interesting examples of the '07 vintage. I really enjoy the delicate floral strawberry/cherry notes on the nose. Both wines are quite light on the palate (the Voillot more so) and show bright acidity. I think they will mature early given their easygoing, lightweight personalities. They are lighter but more focused than 2000s and those lovely floral notes are quite enticing.

I served the wines blind to my wife (who drinks Burgundy almost exclusively) and she was underwhelmed noting the lack of depth and inability to balance the modest acidity. While I would defend Burgundy to the death if accosted by a Bordeaux-lover, I have to admit that these wines are a caricatures of what non-Burg-lovers fault in Burgundy. There is a plethora of pretty red fruited elements but scarcely enough depth to complement even the mildest food. That said, there is also considerable delicate and ethereal charm.

Of these two, the de Montille Pommard Pezerolles is clearly superior and offers more depth in addition to the floral precision. Overall, I won’t hesitate to order '07s at restaurants but I haven’t yet found the thesis for adding them to my cellar.

Thanks Kevin.
Any thoughts on the de Montille Pezerolles 06. Or any of his wines in 06 in general?

Thanks for the note. I was pondering picking up some 07 Montilles this month, but then your Winter release email came in…
