Sorry, but the price isn't in the computer, so you buy for..

My wife and I were enjoying Bedford Ave in the ‘hipster’ Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. (It’s 1 stop from Manhattan on the L train, which runs along 14th street). There was an interesting looking boutique wine store on a corner called UVA Wines and Spirits http://www.uvawines.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Just like you, my idea of fun shopping is exploring wine shops, especially a wine shop that I’ve never been in. It’s a small shop. Wines are set up by location. I’m looking at the US section, and I see a 2009 Paumanok Chardonnay Festival. Janice and I visited with Charles, and bought an assorted case of his wine last summer. Good stuff. His wines are hard to get, even in the NY area. I enjoyed the 08, so why not take a flyer on the 09.

Right next to the 09 Chard, they had at least a dozen 2009 Paumanok Chenin Blanc. I loved the 08. I didn’t see a price on the bottle or listed on the shelf. I asked how much. I figured mid - upper $20’s based on the price I paid last year. The clerk says that the wine wasn’t entered in to the computer, so I can have it at the chard price of $15. [wow.gif] My first reaction is [whistle.gif] , followed by flirtysmile . My second reaction is to buy the entire stock.

Here’s what I did…

I’ll let you fill in the blank while I enjoy the sunny day. Details to follow tonight.

Are we supposed to guess what you did? Apparently you “enjoyed the sunny day”. Whether or not you enjoyed it with many bottles of Chenin Blanc remains to be seen.

You negotiated the price up, to get more miles?

The owner Jeff is a good guy and depending on who the clerk was, he may actually have known what it cost, particularly if he put the order in, and may have known that he wasn’t going to lose money for the store. Or the clerk may have been the owner anyway. And you don’t know that they didn’t get a great price on the wine.

I don’t know what you did, but it happens sometimes.

Was in UVA and was very impressed with the store
it is in my rotation for quirky stuff. Like chambers street stuff
they have had some incredible deals that I should gave struck on

will absolutely keep in the rotation
plus it’s fun to go to the burg

does anyone over 30 live in that hood?

You purchased 1 for tonights dinner.

You opened one on the train and drank it out of the bottle? [berserker.gif]

You immmediately called Gary York and he talked you out of it?

I don’t know anything about that wine, but I would not want to pull one over on a small wine shop due to a clerk or computer error.

Half right. I purchased one bottle.

I didn’t deal with the owner, because he most certainly would have known the price, or where to look for the price. The clerk offered to meet me half way between my estimate of the chenin blanc and the chard. $20. I could have bought them out when he told me he’d sell the chenin blanc to me at the chard price of $15… but I couldn’t do it. This is a small shop. Wouldn’t have been right. Disclaimer, I have jumped all over airfare and hotel errors. [wink.gif]

Dan,

That was the right thing to do!!! I would have done the same thing.

I say, don’t make assumptions. How do you even know they want to make a profit and stay in business? Havn’t you seen “The Producers”? You might have screwed up their whole business plan. [head-bang.gif]

I went back to the store yesterday. The price of this wine is $25.
