Sonoma Trip Day 1 - Scherrer and Starks

Quick stop at Taqueria San Bruno on the way out of SF. Excellent Al pastor and pollo tacos, carne asada was good but paled in comparison.

Drove straight to Scherrer and was greeted by Fred Scherrer who provided a generous and excellent tasting, along with interesting conversation and insights into his winery and winemaking. We sampled a Rosè, followed by a 2017 OMV zin, 2016 RRV Pinot, 2014 Hallberg Pinot, 2016 Huntsman, 2017 High slope Pinot, 2014 Calypso Syrah, and a 2003 Cab. I didn’t take detailed notes but the wines all ranged from very very good to nothing short of excellence in a bottle. Fred was a great host and the tasting lasted 2 hours but seemed much shorter since we were enjoying our time. Can’t recommend a visit here strongly enough.

Stopped at Starks in Santa Rosa for dinner and the small plates we had from the happy hour menu were mainly good and great value. We got oysters on the half shell, calamari, a prime rib banh mi, and potato skin fondue. Only the potato skin fondue disappointed - it was decent but the potatoes lacked seasoning.

Tomorrow is Peterson, Nalle and Acorn. Looking forward to visiting them all, but Scherrer set a pretty high bar for the trip.

You set the bar pretty high on day 1. Enjoy the rest of your stay!

I’m impressed you are posting day of. That is dedication! Hearing about your tasting makes me wish we would have been invited along with you :innocent:

Nice! Scherrer is the least assuming tasting on earth. It’s literally a warehouse in the woods. The first time I visited, well over a decade ago (I had been buying the zins for some time already), he opened 13 different bottles to showcase his range. The best!

I try to keep the number of bottles in the single digits, now. There’s no set tasting. It depends on what someone is looking for. Unfortunately, I do far fewer tasting appointments since I inherited vineyard duties at our family vineyard a couple years ago. We have resumed open houses three times a year this past year, though.
