Had some friends over for a Syrah night yesterday. A few Berserkers some Snooth friends and others. Started with a Halćon vertical of '08-'11 Copain and '09-'13 Alturas. Have to say that Pauls wines were shining bright. A great showing. Was kinda hectic hosting 20+ people so I hope some of the others can pop in with some notes. Right now it’s all a blur. Good times!
Whoa - that is an impressive line up of syrahs, my friend! Wow - more syrahs together than I’ve seen in a loooong time!
Are you going to post notes on this or is someone else - really curious to see how some of these showed.
Cheers!
Has anyone recovered yet?
Looks like a great time! Some familiar wines and faces there. I look forward to reading some notes.
Wow, what a fun lineup of Syrah! There must have been some MAJORLY purple teeth that night - should have bought Colgate stock on Friday.
What a broad collection of styles, too. Notes might be too much to ask for, but I’m sure there’s at least ONE geek in the crowd, right? Funny how it is so many bottles that you had to take pics in groups of 5-6, and I see why. Plenty of familiar faces in the crowd, plenty of familiar labels in the pics. Congrats on your deck holding up, too.
Nice! Where are some notes? I’d like to see your impression on the Copain Halcon vertical, for sure.
Where was my invite?!?
How did that Cabot hold up in that group?
We want notes!
Impressive line-up indeed. Not much WA St., no Saxum or SQN?
Wow!!! This is impressive.
My rough notes… This was probably only about half the wines since I started making pizza for the group and really was more interested in drinking than tasting by then.
08 Copain halcon dark purple garnet ash smoke nose light red fruit citrus acidity, some funkiness like old gym socks, perhaps from the stem inclusion?
09 Copain halcon dark purple magenta very similar nose to 08 tighter on the palate, mouth puckering acidity, very tannic needs several years
09 Alturas red fruit BBQ nose, minty peppery some pepper, some oak much more approachable than the Copain
10 Copain halcon black olives, bacon, pepper, blue fruit, really excellent.
10 Alturas black olive, garlic greens on the nose? Very black pepper mouth watering long finishh
11 Copain halcon sweet red fruit nose mouth watering acidity. Paul had double-decanted this the night before perhaps why this was showing much more fruit than the others.
11 Alturas strong peppered bacon, savory palate, excellent!
12 Alturas purple dark fruit nose, black olive, peppery finish.
13 Alturas barrel sample soft purple fruit pepper tannic finish, very promising.
Blind flight #1 Cardiac Hill:
1: dark fruit pepper fr oak, very expressive nose, heat on the finish, very ripe and soft 08 Carlisle
- smoky, bright red fruit, some pepper some funk, sulphur/reductive '10 Jemrose Cardiac Cuvée
3: Some smoky BBQ nose, tart red fruit, acidic, promising but needs time. '12 Riverain
Blind flight #2 CA Syrah
1: Bacon fat, black olive, spicy red and blue fruit really nice, very precise, best so far perhaps WOTN 2011 Quivet Las Madres
2: Tight, citrus acidity, some blueberry, needs time. 2011 Myriad Las Madres
3: Very strong sulphur one the nose, reductive, peppery 2009 Bedrock Hudson Pleine de Chene… Revisited this a couple hours later and the sulphur had blown off, recommend a long decant if opening one of these soon.
I thought I had more notes but I guess not. Fantastic event Brian! Although really over the top. This was the extent of my note taking abilities, afterwards everything just tasted like Syrah.
Awesome!
2012 Riverain? Really. Nordhoff must have cut one loose from the safe!
2008 Copain Halcon. I know this is on Rat’s WOTY list. Rat, how did it show? As for that 2010, I’ll open a bottle soon and check back in. That oughta be settling in soon and starting to move forward.
I count like 47 open bottles
I feel sorry for Brian’s recycling bin
“Some Syrah in Forestville” ?
That’s ALL the Syrah in Forestville.
Waiting for notes…
They should be sobered up enough in a few days.
LMAO!
That’s a seriously awesome line-up of wines.
