Some really nice deals on Zind Humbrecht

Gosh, are you folks that, uhhh, oblivious, that you are not seeing the obvious sarcasm, with the intent of Enzo to diminish the competition (and keep the prices down) for the most glorious juice? Happens almost daily around here (and elsewhere, if there’s anyone around).

Here is another instance of the same modus…

Wait, this was sarcasm? I’m so confused…

I wouldn’t call it evil, just sensible. [cheers.gif]

I had a great bottle of 1996 Hauserer a couple of weeks ago, and a very good 1996 Brand in the last year. Those are my last bottles of my ZH experiments.

I’d buy Hauserer again, but it is more expensive thatnFrederic Emile, so…

Well , belive and buy what you want. I have first hand experience of people buying ZH on points and hating them. I’ve visited them twice, and I feel the same about the wines I like and mostly they are not for me, and not for most people I know who are serious about Alsatian wine. Your experience may be different.

I think what bothers me most about Z-H’s wines (beside all the reasons stated above) is that the wines made under Leonard’s regime (1988 and prior) were/are so brilliant. They were dry, in the Trimbach and Boxler mode. Incredible purity and definition, not the gobby messes that the wines have become. I do NOT want regular cuvees (that is, not VT or SGN) of Alsatian wines to be sweet and alcoholic.

I have had exceptions, especially from Brand (and David is correct, Boxler’s is better). That’s all due to Brand terroir despite what Z-H does to try and screw it up. For me, those are the driest wines from the Grand Cru vineyards that Z-H works with.

Sommerberg is Boxler’s best terroir, IMO.

Even that has become more ripe. No fighting climate change, I guess.

Why yes, I was in on the joke. Guess my sarcasm was too oblique for you? And BTW, comments were not addressed to Enzo. But you missed that neener

Agreed, but since Z-H doesn’t make wine from there, I didn’t see the need to bring it up. I still have a couple of bottles of '96 Sommerberg L31E Riesling. I’m saving one for friends on their next visit to the Bay Area.

That should mean my next visit to the Bay Area. Frenemy style.

Oh yeah, with Yanniger, I haven’t seen that fuck in 10 years.

You know I’ll be there in July. [cheers.gif]

It’s like a mystery, wrapped up in an enigma, stuck in a hot dog bun.

newhere neener

Wow, never saw this thread coming. FWIW, I am a fan of ZH wines and really do appreciate that he makes the wines based on his view of what the vineyard gave him AND he lets us know thru the use of his indice. The Gewurz in question is a 3 and the Riesling is a 1. I am happy to buy the stuff on sale, but now I “know” why they are often on sale. newhere

Yep. Haven’t heard anything about possible jeebi. Sure hope it’s after the 4th weekend. I’ll be in Healdsburg from Fri-Mon for my stepdaughter’s wedding.

Well I guess Loren’s innocent post went kinda wild pileon
I note you are using the Sweetness level numbers (RS index?)
Where can I find that?
I looked in 101 but it’s not there

Thanks
Rip

Rats! Going to miss you. That’s when I’m there.

They are a Zh convention, not a standard.

I got rid of my Zind Humbrecht Brands which I bought on the basis of WA reviews with huge points and decades-long drinking windows. On release the 2001 (98 points) was fiercely structured and whatever it had was all bound up in “potential.” I decided to check in on one last year and it was already over the hill. Some 1990s vintages with ratings nearly as high were equally tired and stale, which indicated to me that the condition of the 2001 was not a temporary dumb phase as apologists will doubtlessly insist. I did not make a profit on those sales, which might say something about the market for these wines.

Anyone try drinking the 2004 Boxler Brand lately? Wonder if that’s come out of its shell at all.
