2002 Verget Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (10/20/2013)
Upon first opening it was as I feared - aromas of vanilla and oaky lemon on the palate. But this ‘blew off’ almost immediately and something more recognizable as Chablis emerged. Whiffs of sea and stone along with lemon and quite restrained vanilla and flowers made for an outstanding nose. The palate continued with this theme as well. The impression was of lightness and and being very fresh. This is one of the best Vergets I have ever had. It paired nicely with rockfish too. Outstanding. -
2008 Domaine de la Grenaudière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie La Grenouille - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine #10/19/2013)
Great aromatics - floral notes, stones, chalk, and sea spray. This five year old Muscadet has matured nicely. The palate has a full feel to it and has a perceived richness to balance the mineral and citrus. Excellent. -
2005 Domaine François Cotat #Paul & François) Sancerre Cuvée Spéciale Les Monts Damnés - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre (10/19/2013#
It’s nice to experience a wine that was out of balance in youth that is now superb in middle age. A bit middling on aromatics but complete on the palate. Light body feel, touches of sharp minerality, gooseberry and citrus along with something that reminds me of tropical fruits #but isn’t#, with a mouthfeel that is simltaneously light and has a richness to it. No issues with oxidation and the clumsy oak of youth has disappeared. Excellent to Outstanding. -
2004 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Clos de Sainte Catherine - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon (10/19/2013#
Very nice peach and stonefruit with good zing to it. Very Good.
