Just bought a Blendtec 570. Any favorite smoothie recipes or websites/blogs with recipes? I’m looking to incorporate one a day in place of breakfast or lunch. TIA-
2 cups mixed greens of choice (I use spinach, kale, mixed spring greens)
1 inch ginger coarsely chopped
1 apple coarsely chopped
1/2 avocado
1 Tbsp honey
1/4 C cranberry juice
large pinch of cayenne pepper (to taste)
1/2 C water
You can adjust the relevant amounts depending on how thick/thin/fruity/sweet/spicy you like your smoothie
I have 1 every morning for breakfast. I have an intolerance to avocado(+can’t stand it), so you could use that vs. the yogurt I do.
Key for me is to have 1 or 2 ingredients frozen for texture/enjoyment.
My fav is
1-1.5 c frozen Mango
2 cups of baby spinach (Kale works, but doesn’t blend as well)
1/2 cup of yogurt
3-4 slices of fr. banana
grated frozen ginger, tsp or so of ground cinnamon
Top off with enough juice/almond/ coconut milk or waters to allow blending. I’m good until noon with these now vs. solid food.
We keep it simple around here. Protein powder, frozen banana, assorted frozen berries, half lemon, couple ice cubes and a chunk of peeled ginger. About 300 calories and keeps me going until lunch as well. We use a Vita Mix and it pulverizes all including ginger in no time.
When first trying the ginger I didn’t peel it and learned quickly it is not good for my stomach. The lemon gives it a nice acidic kick - in pursuit of balance!
Depends on the mood I’m in, but often very simple
Frozen raspberries / blackberries
Orange juice / apple juice
Strawberry yoghurt / raspberry yoghurt
Ice
half a frozen banana
handful frozen berries (I use strawberries and TJ frozen mixed berry blend)
almond/cashew milk to cover fruit
Tbs pure peanut powder (I use the Naked brand)
Sometimes I add a scoop of vanilla protein powder if I am drinking before/after working out.
I find that if I use frozen fruit, I really don’t need ice and the flavor is much more concentrated.
Don’t get your knickers in a twist - the assertion was “most” not “all.” You can have a pat on the head for putting together a generally healthy recipe. But most smoothies are not as well designed. They are often sugar bombs with a ton of calories and little in the way of macro-nutrients. Tons of people trying to lose weight add these calorie-laden items to their diets and wonder why they aren’t getting thinner. Even generally good-for-you items like fruit can get out of hand with calories.
The main reason why some people are critical of smoothies as a “health food” is because you’re pureeing the fiber in the fruits and vegetables. When fiber is pureed it doesn’t slow down the absorption of the sugars from fruit. It also doesn’t keep you full like non-pureed fiber does. Also, a lot of smoothies add a lot of high fat foods (nuts, full fat dairy, coconut milk, etc.).
Good points, but the greater good is still served by the word of caution – the idea that most smoothies are “healthy” remains daft. And I don’t think your Main Idea is the main idea. That’s a fairly nuanced high minded one. The main idea is they’re too high in sugar period. Most people looking for smoothie recipes are looking for Jamba Juice recipes and to get there you pretty much add rainbow sherbet to all the ones submitted here, or in a few cases like my personal fave jamba juice, the dream machine, fatten it up a bunch as you mentioned.
