small etching on 2018 Andremely EABA & Grenache?

I was just affixing labels and stowing these away when I noticed this odd etching, any idea what it is/does/means? I’ve never seen it before on any product, and though it looks a little like a QR code, it does not appear to be one.

Is that actually etched in the bottle? Looks like the residue some stickers can leave behind.

it appears to be laser etched, it’s in the same location on every single bottle (though not necessarily in relation to the front and back labels, that varies).

Did you try scanning it? Just about every smart phone has a QR code reader.

I did, it isn’t recognized as a QR code.

Shoot I just put away some bottles with a similar looking etching that were Andremily. Maybe my Marcassin chard’s that just got in?

I can check tomorrow if it helps.

I had an 2018 EABA last night and didn’t notice. Looks interesting.

I’ve started to notice something like this showing up on some higher end bottles recently. Maybe it’s a way for the winery to keep track of authenticity, or for some other reason.

Yep, im pretty sure thats exactly what it’s for Kirk. I remember reading something about it a while back but I can’t find the article. Not sure how you use them though since as the OP mentioned, you can’t scan it like a normal QR code [shrug.gif]

I can’t remember which winery, but I’ve seen them on some bottles as well. Would be interesting to know exactly how it works.

I’ll be shocked if it’s an anti-counterfeiting measure. I mean, aren’t most fakes reusing the original bottle anyhow?

To me, this looks like something for the bottling line operations. Perhaps with Jim expanding offerings/production, the bottling operations have gotten more sophisticated?

I shot an email off to 'em to try and satisfy my curiosity, will report back what I learn.

that was fast

Thank you for reaching out. The etching is used for produce [sic] tracing by the manufacturer. These days even empty bottles are counterfeit. These bottles were produced using the highest industry standards. These [sic] are a number of knockoffs out there using poor sanitation, odd input blends, and low quality control standards. This is used to track each lot produced including production dates, and who received these bottles.

Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday, hopefully celebrating with a bit of Andremily!

Very best
