I love a Mexican Negroni with Mezcal, Sweet Vermouth, Campari, but as I’ve been experimenting, I like the above posted recipe even more. It’s definitely a personal preference. I’ve always liked the smokiness of mezcal in a cocktail. It’s not for everyone.
Mezcal allows no additives. The best entry level Mezcals for me are Conejos, for readily available and solid, and Agave de Cortes from the Cortes family of El Jologorio fame if you enjoy artisinal Mezcal.
The challenge with Mezcal is a person’s toleraance for smoke as there is no measure to tell the consumer if its mild or strong in a bottling.
But consistent bottle to Bottle, like all Vida would have similar smokiness?
Pretty close…Mezcal Joven (Blanco Tequila too) is more like wine due to agave being an agricultural product more akin to grapes even though it’s distilled since it isn’t augmented by oak. Vida and Conejos are the 2 most readily available and offer the most consistency bottle to bottle.
Stuff more mas produced like Vida should, but lots of the small batch stuff varies widely
Just like @RichardFlack I’m a Mezcal newbie. How would this rate:
A buddy got me to buy this and although I like the flavor profile, I do find it a tad bit sweet.
My Mezcal experience comes from mixed drinks in bars .
I do like the Peychauds aperitivo and I mule it back from NO for around $20 so quite a bit less than the $35 I have to pay for Compari. I usually add a couple of drops of orange bitters.
Latest variation is substituting 7 year
Havana Club for the gin. Quite a bit like a Boulevardier. Needs a little adjustment, little less vermouth as the rum is a tad sweet. The rum shines through nicely.
I’m not familiar with that producer.
Not familiar. Espadin is the most “common” variety of plant used to make mezcal. That’s not a bad thing, just means it’s nothing unusual.
I think you might enjoy this hand variation cocktail
Right Hand
1.5 oz aged rum
0.75 oz sweet vermouth
0.75 oz Campari
2 dashes chocolate bitters
Garnish: cherry
I’m sure I would. I gifted my son some chocolate bitters for Christmas. I’ll get him to bring them next time he is home.
