SFChron: Corse Wines

JanetFletcher writes for the SFChron mostly on cheese. This iis one of her infrequent wine articles. Rather interesting.

All the wines are KermitLynch wines; who’s a real champion of Corsican wines.

All my experience with the wines are from Kermit’s portfolio, too, and the region is definitely worth exploring. One producer not mentioned but worth seeking out is Antoine Arena. The reds remind me of a hypothetical blend of southern rhone and piedmonte nebbiolo, with the garrigue notes of the former and the structure of the latter.

Abbatucci’s rose has been my favorite rose of the year! (along w/ Arnot-Roberts TourigaNacional)

Thanks Tom. Are you familiar with any of the wines. I’m intrigued.

I’ve had only a dozen or so of these wines over the yrs, Todd. They are rather interesting in a peasant/rustic
sort of way…but nothing that have really wowed me.

Up in MA, somehow all we see is vin de Ile de Beaute Pinot Noir, no idea why we don’t see other grapes, would think that Rhonish grapes would be more successful.

This thread was ‘of Corse’.

This winter I enjoyed a few bottles of 2010 Domaine Maestracci, Clso Reginu which is imported by Kermit Lynch. Really well done at $13. I think it is a good affordable introduction to Corsica. Here is my note:

2010 Domaine Maestracci, Clos Reginu, Corse Calvi
This drank well over two nights. The wine is a light ruby color with a grape/purple tinge. There is a light, gritty nose with a rich undertone that is both familiar and different. The flavors initially build to red fruit, pepper, with little waves from the Southern Rhone. These lighter flavors are structured with drying tannins. There are impressions of richness followed by supple black cherry, hard stones, pepper, and a leaner aftertaste. *** Now-2015.
