Had mine for 3+ years and love it, no problems. I did the 48 hours let it settle thing FWIW.
Not sure if it was said above but if you’re planning on stacking bottles make sure to use the little dowels to LOCK the wooden shelf in so it can’t slide.
For nicer or odd size bottles I highly recommend the EuroCave Main du Sommelier Rolling shelves. They fit perfectly in the Artevino, roll seamlessly and each holder for the bottle is fully adjustable. HIGHLY recommend. I’ve got these in the top 3 shelves and then wood in the bottom.
@Geoff_Weathersby, @Jon_H, did you have to do anything special/unusual to get the MDS rolling shelves to fit/work in your Artevino III? I’ve got one to be delivered shortly, and asked a tech support chap at Wine Enthusiast about fitting MDS shelves to an Artevino, and he said that they wouldn’t work. I pointed out that customers at various online forums indicated they did, and in fact WS itself has several customer reviews of the MDS that indicated they worked well in an Artevino III, but he would not change his tune. Hmmm…he did try to upsell me on one of the spendier Eurocave cellars they carry, so…
Anyway, any tips or tricks? I’m looking at not using the bundled “display” shelf and would like to install some rolling shelves in that spot.
Also, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble, would you measure the width and length of an MDS shelf and post it here? That spec doesn’t seem to be available anywhere online, at least so far as I have seen.
In the photo, I’m not seeing the interior brace that supports the side walls. Does yours not have that, or am I just not seeing it because of the glare on the glass?
Our Artevino III was just delivered. I couldn’t find MDS shelf dimensions anywhere – at Eurocave, Wine Enthusiast, or elsewhere – but just measured the primitive shelving that ships with the unit and they’re exactly 535mm or 21" in both width and length. Unfortunately, the shelving and guides I saved from our old Eurocave 266 Comfort Series were just a wee bit too long to enable retrofitting to the Artevino. We’re talking just a couple of millimeters, but it’s enough to not work.
Sounds like the MDS should work in my Artevino, so I’ll order some from WE.
I have 3 mds shelves, they all work perfectly with Artevino III. They also stack better than the original wooden shelves. I can install 2 MDS shelves with only two holes between them while the wooden ones need 3.
Thanks, Dan. My 3 shelves should be here next week.
Since their spacing is different, does it work better if the MDS and wooden shelves are stacked separately, or can they be interspersed without looking weird, or losing more vertical space than necessary?
Interesting thought, I haven’t tried interleaving. Wooden shelves are better in stacking mode than sliding mode in term of storage density. MDS can’t do stacking.
The MDS shelves arrived today, and am happy to confirm they do fit the Artevino III nicely! I think I’ve determined the best way to integrate them with the existing wooden sliding and storage shelves, also taking the brace bar into account, which I’ll try tomorrow. While the wooden shelves are rather primitive and as noted not quite as space-efficient as the MDS, at this point I’m disinclined to replace them all.
Haven’t encountered any unexpected problems so far. Hoiw wider bottles work will generally be determined by the interior width of the cellar (and the shelf distance, of course). In some cases one might need to go to 10 bottles per shelf, but the MDS makes that easy. The one type of bottle that can be challenging to accomodate are those annoyingly high- and wide-shouldered bottles some Napa wineries have adopted. But fortunately we’re much more inclined towards European wines.
I just got one secondhand. It was a Costco return from a warehouse. It had a dinged door that they fixed.
Anyway, in the bag there are quite a few of these white plastic things and I cannot figure out what they are for. I thought they might be the fittings to prevent the shelves from sliding, since I don’t seem to have any of the wood dowels. But I cannot detach the small round part, so I’m lost.
Does that middle piece twist out somehow? I cannot figure out how these prevent the shelves from sliding out. I’ve tried twisting the cylindrical part and nothing budges.
