I keep a bit of Selosse in France and checked in on a few bottles over the past couple of weeks. I love these wines. They are singular and there is something magic about them, much in the way Rayas is magic and singular for Chateauneuf.
N.V. Jacques Selosse Initial: This is a 2022/01/07 disgorgement. A nice of hazelnuts, honey, peaches and cream and chalk. There’s a touch of truffley development. The palate is full and vinous with plenty of sap and a gentle creaminess through the mid. The finish is flecked with flint and chalk and acidity is starting to soften a little. Certainly ready to play.
N.V. Jacques Selosse Initial: 2018 base, disgorged 6/6/2024. A nose of truffled honey, salty lemon, spiced pear and apple. Good richness and power without any excess weight. Creamy through the mid, loads of chalk and salt to the long finish.
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles : 2016 base and disgorged in 2023. Ripe peach, brioche, chalk and brown spices greet the nose. The palate is full and fleshy and it has a light nuttiness. There are layers of flavour and great intensity. Chalky and salty things linger.
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Ay La Côte Faron : This one was 2016 base, disgorged the 16th of February 2023 and there is zero dosage. It has notes of strawberry, blood orange, truffled honey and hay. The palate is rich and powerful and super tangy. There’s some chalk and saline minerality. It is deep and chewy and has outstanding length.
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Premier Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Mareuil-sur-Ay Sous le Mont : 2015 disgorgement and drinking really well. Red apples, smoky mineral, cranberry and lemon curd notes. Full, rich, deep and powerful. Vinous and engaging. Light florals with air and chalky chew to the very long finish. Ready to go.
