Hello All,
I’m building a modest temperature controlled wine room adjacent to my living room area and looking for recommendation for wine room doors, ideally in the San Francisco Bay Area (ideally North or East Bay). Given the wife and with the location in the house, aesthetics will matter – looking for french door style with metal framed glass that can keep climate control, and be nice to look at and look through! Would very much appreciate any recommendations. Thank you!
We installed a Rustica door and we’re really happy with it.
I have a metal framed glass door with a contemporary metal handle that is an EXTERIOR commercial glass door (photo below) - note that 2 walls of the cellar are also commercial glass.
I’d go heavy wood, solid, at least 2" thick. Insulation trumps aesthetics. I use a solid oak door that was the old front door c. 80 years old when we moved. Gets people curious and has excellent insulation properties.
This.
I did the same thing with a double-pane exterior door in my basement wine cellar. Love it. Listen to the lady of the house, its nice to see your wine.
Will send a pic in a subsequent post, but bottom line, its a good solution.
Thank you for the great recommendations, and beautiful photos!
Sounds like Exterior Door, Dual Paned for sure. Does it need to be Thermally broken?
Check out Pinky’s Iron Doors. I have the Air 5 - Double Flat. Very good looking and wife-approved.
Thank you Nate. Someone else mentioned Pinky’s as well, so I’ve been looking at the Air 4 which is very similar to your Air 5 which is really great looking. Can I ask you if you: 1) got a bottom threshold or went with a sweep instead (and if the latter, does it work well / any adverse impact to flooring?) and 2) did you have low e glass or not? And chance you can share with me your contact there, and have a photos of yours (they don’t seem to have any photos for these doors in this use case, so I’m really trying to get a sense). Thank you for your help!
I used WeldWork (based in Royal Oak, MI) and am thrilled with their work. Not cheap but they did a custom 9’ door and viewing window that I’m thrilled with. Great weight, well built/engineered and (I think) it looks amazing. We dealt with Ezra.
Thank you Javier! Your door looks amazing! I’ll give them a call.
I found the Provia EMBARQ SERIES FIBERGLASS.R VALUE 10. it Was the highest r value I could find. About $2750.
cool lopez heredia art prints, where did you ever come across those? I feel like I’ve seen them once before.
At the winery in Haro! I had asked about buying prints that I saw on display when we were tasting there. Unbelievably, a worker took my phone number, called me later that evening and I picked them up from her house the next day on my drive back to Madrid! GRATIS.
I have been looking for iron & glass doors too. Something like attached. I had contacted Pinky’s but will reach out to these guys too.
Check out Jada. I have no experience with them, just have heard good things.
I would imagine most larger population centers would have one or more custom glass door companies.
It’s true in the metro area closest to me.
I live in NY and spoke to one of the local cellar builders. Presumably they have good sourcing. He told me that he orders his doors from Pinky’s , which is in LA, as he has found them to have the best quality wine doors in the style that I am looking for (contemporary metal and glass doors). Until now I hadn’t found anything else. But really like the work that Weldworks does. Thanks @J_Ramos for sharing.
We ordered a cellar door from Weldworks, happy to provide a review when it comes in. The people there have been good to work with
What’s the ETA on the door? One note, make sure they fabricate enough hinges on the door. Mine only has three, which work, but four would have been better.
