Scottsdale Wine Shops

Hi,

I will be in Scottsdale AZ next month, any tips on good wine shops to visit in the area?

Thanks!

I’d say your best bet is AZ Wine Company, which is on Scottsdale Rd. North of Thomas (south Scottsdale). Great overall selection and solid prices.

Not sure exactly what you’re looking for but the Costco in North Scottsdale is really solid and worth a look if you’re close by, and there’s always the usual suspects if needed (Total Wine, Bevmo).

More wine bars than shops honestly, but hopefully the above helps a little bit.

Thank you! Mostly into old world stuff like Burgundy and Barolo. Is Az Wine Company a retail store or a wine bar? Their website makes me think it is a winebar?

It’s a wine store first and foremost but they also have a little wine bar.

If you’re into Italian wines, there’s a random little deli in S. Scottsdale called DeFalcos. They actually have a really fun and we’ll thought out wine selection with a focus on Italian wines. I’m not big into Italian wines so take that with a grain of salt…but worth a look if you’re close by.

And to confirm, the wines at DeFalcos are available for retail purchase (just realized it sounded like I meant they poured wine by the glass/etc at the Deli)

I’d check out FnB if you’re looking for a fun place to have a glass of wine and talk about it-- great food too!

Just to make sure you are aware, AZ is a non-byob state. It’s against state law, unless there is no liquor license. Located adjacent to AZ Wine Co is Atlas Bistro, which fits the bill as they have no liquor license. For my money, it’s the best meal in AZ (there are not a lot of great dining options here).

I describe living here as being in the wine witness protection program. Limited selection, no BYOB, very few high end wine events. But the weather’s pretty good. [cheers.gif]

Ha ha! That’s a pretty spot on analogy! Not much selection at all (hence why most of my wine is purchased online and through lists), and it is damn frustrating there’s only a couple BYOBs…but I absolutely agree on Atlas. Killer restaurant and the BYOB aspect is ideal.

Thanks for the tips! I wasn’t aware of the non-byob. I will do my best to check out Atlas.

Thanks again!

Depending on where you are staying, a trip to The Wine Store adjacent to Tarbell’s Restaurant and Tarbell’s Tavern in Phoenix might not be inconvenient. If you eat at the Tavern you can drink wine from the shop at retail prices which while not the cheapest are reasonable.
For the best quality/price retail wines in Scottsdale try Phoenix Wine at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea.

Tavern is hands down my favorite wine bar type place in town, and great call on The Wine Store. Great people working there too. Jordan will take great care of you (and is literally there all the time)
