I’m keen to explore Scheurebe a little more so was happy to pick up this mixed six. I think it’s a grape that may shine a little brighter in warmer times.
A warmup bottle
2020 Müller-Ruprecht Scheurebe Scheurebe Kabinett - Germany, Pfalz (05/07/2021)
Light, sherbet and grape. A lovely freshwater midpalate, tangy and zippy. Uncomplicated fun at €7 a bottle.
2020 Weingut Jürgen Hofmann Scheurebe trocken- Germany, Rheinhessen (08/07/2021)
Light yellowy gold, expressive nose of green fruits, fresh coriander and parsley, just slightly supple with a little rs, crisp with a bite a little reminiscent of a Loire SB. Good value uncomplicated stuff at e7.5
I like Scheurebe - from Germany or Southern Styria (Austria) where it´s often called Sämling88 -
very nice everyday wines, especially in the summer, some are even excellent (but I haven´t found a really great one so far)
2020 Weingut Bischel Scheurebe trocken- Germany, Rheinhessen (09/07/2021)
Spritzy, just. This is leaner, a bit strict, red grapefruit, peach skin, dried banana skin. Has a bit of depth and weight with a really fine tension.
2020 Weingut Keller Scheurebe Kabinett- Germany, Rheinhessen (15/07/2021)
Really energised, packed with sherberty, grassy, pithy lime and mint. Excellent. Long taut finish, puckering.
2020 Wittmann Scheurebe trocken- Germany, Rheinhessen (13/07/2021)
Again a lighter style, very crisp and fine with parsley and coriander, slight midpalate, doesn’t have much weight to the midpalate, but racy and fresh.
2020 Kühling-Gillot Scheurebe Quinterra trocken- Germany, Rheinhessen (12/07/2021)
Quite racy, steely and sharp, less expressive fruits but more exciting overall. Muscadet acidity with a flash of pomelo.
2020 Weingut Udo Engel Scheurebe- Germany, Rheinhessen (11/07/2021)
Red fruits on the nose, grassy lemon pith. A little overweight in the middle. Will appeal to many but I’d prefer more tension.
