It perplexes me that few producers attempt this restrained, latent and food-friendly style. While it takes particular focus to harvest this unevenly ripening variety at the optimum time, the reward is a wine that stands right up alongside the typical ânoble grapes.â Itâs almost like Zinfandel has become the elevator music of wine due to the generally elevated ripeness level most producers seem to think this grape must be forced to endure. This is the wine that really illustrates who we are and how we approach all the varieties we work with.

Offer 2: Sonoma County Kick Ranch Grenache Study
Kick Ranch is located in Rincon Valley which is on the cooler end of the spectrum for this variety in Sonoma County. Kick has been typically among the last grapes brought in each vintage. In 2017, it was harvested about a week before the Tubbs fire that devastated much of Santa Rosa after ripping through this site minutes earlier during the night. There is great depth to these wines without being heavy or heady.

Offer 3: Platt Vineyard Library check out
Along with several esteemed colleagues, around 2000, I was invited to get in on the ground floor with several blocks of vines right at planting time. We were all able to select clones we wanted to use there. My run of vintages from this fine site was 2007-2021, the longest of any. This swath of library releases is in the middle section of this run, showing some bottle development which is something we value highly here.
