Saving Old Vineyards - Economics vs Heritage

It appears that additional details of Historic Vineyard Society’s collaboration with Foundation Plant Services should be expected.

Bedrock Wine Co’s latest release notes (shared here by Morgan Twain-Peterson MS) relate how certain “Bedrock Vineyard” replants consist of virus-free cuttings from the HVS/FPS project:

"…Perhaps most exciting is that many of the field-blended varieties chosen are the first cuttings to be made available from a years-long project between the Historic Vineyard Society and UC Davis, where we have cleaned up some of the oldest and rarest varieties found in California’s vineyards.

“The result is that we were both able to use those varieties most commonly field-blended in California vineyards -Mataro, Alicante Bouschet, Petite Sirah - we were able to supplement with Syrah (a selection from ‘Bedrock’s’ 1888 cuttings), Petit Bouschet, Vaccarese and even some whites using wood from other old California vineyards…”.

This is an exciting step in the conservation of rare and historically significant vine materials. Of course, it can take years for submitted vineyard cuttings to be screened and cleaned.

In time, I hope more details are made available about the specific varieties collected as well as their source vineyards.
