Savannah Georgia

Restaurant recs for Savannah especially seafood? Not too high end as our guests aren’t foodies. TIA

Our best meal was at The Olde Pink House. It is considered “fine dining” but I wouldn’t call it too high end myself. Solid southern offerings including fish dish I had that evening.

The worst meal we had was easily The Lady & Sons (Paula Deen’s casual eatery). If your idea of a good meal is to circle the buffet table with 200+ of your not so closest friends then this is your place.

Haven’t been since a work trip in 2018 but we had a team dinner at the Grey which was fine. They had/have a more casual luncheon place nearby. Not sure if it survived covid.

Book early for the Grey. I tried 6 weeks out from our visit and nothing was available.

As mentioned, The Grey.
Also, Common Thread.
One of my favorites for casual by the water: The Wyld Dock Bar

Thanks all. Wyld looks a fun lunch spot if the weather is good.

The Pink House and Vic’s on the River.

More casual, two longtime Savannah institutions - Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House (although I have not been since Mrs. Wilkes died) and The Crystal Beer Parlor.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

Not sure if this dinner already happened, but i‘ll suggest some local seafood spots in neighborhoods adjacent to downtown

Driftaway Cafe (Sandfly, very casual)
Castaway Cafe (Sandfly, very casual)
Current (Thunderbolt, casual)
The Wyld (Isle of Hope, very casual)
Deer Creek Coastal Grill (Skidaway Island, upscale private club)

We ate at the Pink House on our honeymoon over 30+ years ago. More recently we dined outside at Chive - very casual, simple, very good seafood About — Chive Seabar & Lounge

Olde Pink House and Grey.
At the Pink house I always book my table in the wine cellar, could fit 4 people but not much more than that. Very unique spot to eat in.

Savannah is such an interesting combination of things that are still there from when I grew up there in the 60s and 70s and things like SCAD that I could not have imagined there. Have a great time.

The Grey was good not great. Service was off also.

Curious- recent? You there now, or just throwing this out?

Was there on a week night in October. Was very excited. Read the book and everything. Maybe expectations were too high but there were a couple of significant misses food wise. Service was really slow. had to chase people down multiple times.

We had a great time in Savannah-a great walking city with nice people. We were with family members who are not foodies and don’t drink which limited our restaurant visits. Best meal was probably Ardsley Station. Fitzroy had an interesting if short winelist and good food . The owner/sommelier is from Sonoma. Thanks for all the recs, we do plan to revisit.

Cotton and Rye was very good on our last visit

Also enjoyed Husk

I’ll add Auspicious bakery to the list. Their ham and cheddar croissant is amazing.

Also, Chiriya’s Thai in Thunderbolt. Delish.

Any recent Savannah visits? Have one night there in April before Palmetto Bluff/Bluffton. Booked the Grey for now but open to something else. Preferably in HIstoric District area as we will be staying there.

It’s been a couple years since my last visit to Savannah, but I have heard good things about new-ish Common Thread. I have dined at their other place, FARM in Bluffton and it was excellent.

Reporting back. FARM in Bluffton was fantastic, best meal of the trip. Nice wines BTG too. Ended up bailing on the Grey as I didn’t realize it was prix fixe, ended up at Husk which was solid but not exceptional.

Also in a complete side note the Montage Palmetto Bluff was excellent, highly recommend esp for people with kids, though the wine lists are terrible (cheap corkage though). edit: apparently they have a huge reserve list, i imagine pricing isn’t great, but at least there are decent options. no idea why they don’t tell you about this when you go!
