Sandlands Winter 2024 Release

Order in for some Mencia and Clarksburg Chenin (which sounds amazing!).

Same, 2 + 2 Mencia and Chenin

Somehow need to get over the fact of shipping expenses…$42 for 4 bottles including a 15% subsidy.

I wish it was all built into the pricing, wine pricing is the one instance I’m okay with things being opaque. It’s really just mental gymnastics because it makes no difference assuming you’d be willing to pay ~$7ish more a bottle.

Works great if you’re buying 1 or 2 bottles, sucks if you’re buying a case.

See how much 3 is to ship. I think the price jumps a fair amount from 3 to 4.

I understand that shipping costs are high and it bothers some people but it is really the all-in costs that matter. I have a case coming today from another winery that is not outrageously priced and I get discount and free shipping as a club member and it is still $250 more than what I paid for the case of Sandlands I ordered yesterday.

$25 wines. People can buy a bottle of single vineyard Chenin Blanc, Cinsault, Carignane, Mencia or Mataro of other brands at the grocery store and save the shipping cost. Oh wait…

The shipping prices yikes, but when I look at what I get re. price and quality, it stings a bit less!

Thought the Assyrtiko was beautiful.

Come on, David, you can’t just come back from a 4 year hiatus and delete your post!

Hah ok - just didn’t want my return to be a negative comment…

As somebody who has been on the sandlands list for a little while, the shipping charges are really starting to get to me. Especially since they split the spring release into two batches this year, which to me seems like a way to collect more on shipping margin. I love the wine, support Tegan, but I’m just not a fan of the practice. Ultramarine seems to be going the same direction.

And candidly this may be what shipping actually costs, but relative to other producers this is usually 20% more in shipping costs (so they may subsidize “even more”, who knows).

It’s starting to feel like these restaurants where they add 10% to the bill to cover XYZ “cost” instead of just adding it to the cost of the dishes.

For clarity since folks think I am making money on shipping!
From my winter release I collected $67,204 on shipping charges. So far from the winter release I have paid $92,358 dollars on shipping, there will be more bills to come re: returns etc. So I personally subsidized $25,154 about 28% of the shipping costs just for the winter release. I believe from the 2023 two releases I subsidized almost $60,000 dollars. Shipping wine is expensive and my least favorite part of the job

I’ve heard that FedEx charges $9 for age verification. As a customer, that hit rate is probably under 40%. No complaints here with them leaving it, but sounds like FedEx is getting the gravy and not the winery.

No surprise here, shipping is expensive at least until you reach Amazonian size

You know David, some might pile on, but to me, I’m glad you said what was on your mind, and as a result we all learned something. Learning is a process for all of us, and a lot of it arises out of people speaking and listening.

Hope to see around more. Be well.

Would definitely like a local pickup option.

For edification, it would be telling to compare the annual cost of shipping year over year as it relates to two verses three shipments per year.

From a logistical perspective, wouldn’t it cost your business and its customers less to ship less frequent larger shipments?

Fewer shipments would increase holding and storage costs.
