San Sebastion, Haro, Bilbao in August?

For various reasons the best time for us to visit northern Spain in 2027 would be August. I like that the area seems to be significantly cooler than much of the rest of the country in summer, so that’s a positive. But can those of you with experience in the area let me know the extent to which the following might be negatives for visiting in August?

  • crowds because it is peak vacation time for western Europe?
  • closures because locals are on vacation - ie. will wineries be open for tastings? Will restaurants be open?
    -any other issues to consider?

Thanks for any thoughts!

There are definitely crowds. That is enough of a turnoff for us that we have never gone in August.

Most restaurants are open, though, as they wish to take advantage of said crowds. I don’t know about the 3* places, but a lit of the better pintxos restaurants like Ganbara go on vacation in June.

If you want an apt rental for that time, book way ahead.

Thanks for the info Sarah.
Do you think tasting rooms at wineries in the Haro area would be open as well?

Sorry, I don’t visit wineries in the region.

We had a terrific lunch at Terete where roast lamb is the star.
