The wife is meeting some friends there in October and since I haven’t been there in 20 years (and don’t remember then), any reccs on where she should stay (cheap), eat (less cheap)? Thanks
Erik, I assume that she will have accesss to a car, otherwise no bueno. For cheap yet centrally located, I would recommend hotels in the Mission Valley area, think it is called Hotel Circle there are many hotels there. Downtown is like 7-10 minutes from there, and there I recommend Cafe Chloe for their great appetizers and Cowboy Star for meat. Downtown there are 3 Spanish places that offer good cheap tapas and excellent Sangria.
5-7 minuted from Hotel Circle on India Street there’s WineVault and Bistro, I love their Saturdays 5 courses for $30, I’m going there in a couple of hours.
Also close by is Bertrand at Mister A’s, for the most memorable views of San Diego. Great cocktails there, but the food is a bit too Continental.
Farmhouse Cafe is also excellent for country French fare, only 7-10 minutes from the Hotel Circle area.
Thanks Otto!
It really depends where you want to be. If you want to stay near downtown, hotel circle works well but if you want to stay in La Jolla or Del Mar, then it’s kinda far. If it were up to me, I would just use hotwire and find the location I wanted to be in.
As for food, good Asian food on Convoy St. I personally like the Spicy City authentic Szechuan food.
Fancy restaurant: Lots of good ones in La Jolla Cove area such as Georges Modern, etc
Cheap mexican: Anything ending with bertos. Robertos, Filabertos.
Wine Brasserie and Bistro has good food and lots of wine.
Roseville is a kickass restaurant too.
yep still around.
Peruse my blog Phil, tons of san diego restaurants.
For some good drinks/food at a reasonable price I’d check out Alchemy.
Our wine group would meet semi-regularly at Roseville in pt Loma
For REALLY authentic mexican food, not that taco/burrito crap check out Super Cocina (also on the blog) which is a ridiculously unique eating experience.
on the higher end of things… Market/Nine-Ten/Addison are great restaurants that could fit in any major culinary city dining experience.
Any questions, feel free to PM/email
are you gonna have a car? Gaslamp is kinda subpar for food. There are some great bars there but food isn’t the best in SD.
if you’re gonna cab it then i’d suggest Farmhouse Cafe (we just did a great offline there), Alchemy, and Roseville. All within 5-6 miles of the convention center.
I plan on being in San Diego next March for Family Winemakers. It’s gonna be awesome. Maybe we can get a Berzerker party going that weekend…and some winemakers.
We had a great dinner after Family Winemakers last year. About 30 people, including winemakers, our fearless leader and Wetrock, showed up at a restaurant in Del Mar. We had a room to ourselves, a tremendous amount of wine, and no corkage!
I’d be happy to coordinate this again.
and they gave separate checks for each person to boot
