My folks are looking for decent bread. Shop ideas?
They tried Artisan Bakery in Escondido. They were unimpressed. They picked up a whole wheat there and did not care for it.
Bread & Cie in Hillcrest for lots of stuff and Solunto Baking on India for semolina bread. Other than that and maybe a Great Harvest or two, it’s a wasteland.
They may want to bake their own now and again. LaBrea has palatable bread in the local markets or Boudin and Panera have restos in San Marcos and Escondido. What types of bread do they seek?
Loic is a small French bakery/deli just off of Del Dios Hwy. west of Rancho Santa Fe in a little shopping center at the entrance to Cielo. They have the best baguettes that I have had outside of France. Otherwise the bread scene in SD is dismal.
Loic also has a pastry/bakery stand at the Rancho Del Rayo Farmers’ Market (San Diegueto Road) on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. Chef Loic is usually there.
If Mom and Dad can find some place that has the La Brea products that are par-baked and finished in the store (usually upper-end supermarkets) it’s pretty good. We’re talking about crusty breads here, not sandwich loaves, right?
Bob - thanks for the La Brea tip - I suggest the same thing and haven’t checked to see if they show where their product is carried on the web page. I will now.
We are talking both (loaf and roll). they’d prefer to have decent loaf bread as well. We have a Great harvest that I happen to really like here and they’d prefer to find the same/similar.
Trader Joe’s has the par baked breads. They also have a whole grain sour dough (sliced) that has a nice texture. It spoils quickly, so I freeze and toast it for sandwiches or to have with soup or salad.
