Sam's Wines - Highland Park, IL Closing

From today’s Tribune

Citing the economy’s current malaise, liquor superstore Sam’s Wines and Spirits said Tuesday that it is closing its Highland Park store, following by a month the shuttering of its store in the South Loop.

The move leaves Sam’s with two stores, one in Lincoln Park on Goose Island and the other in Downers Grove. Company President Dick DiStasio said, “Our two flagship locations in Lincoln Park and Downers Grove continue to have a strong presence in their markets and will be pivotal in the resurgence of future Sam’s locations across Chicagoland.”

But for now, the company said, the ailing economy is forcing it to restructure in order to “put itself on much better financial footing.”

When it closed the South Loop location, Sam’s said the housing crisis and the high number of vacant condos in the area made it impossible to remain open. “Due to the slower than anticipated development of the South Loop area, we were forced to cease operations at that location,” DiStasio said at the time.

Yeah, but is Binny’s also closing places? No.

A store in NY is having a bankruptcy sale tomorrow (selling fridges, etc) and another national importer has declared bankruptcy…

things are looking up!

As with every industry, this is needed - a shake down, as there are too many players in the game, no matter what the ‘game’ happens to be.

The trick is surviving.

Which are those?

Not that I’m aware of. In fact, one would think with the 2 Sam’s locations closing it would only make Binny’s stronger.

Matt Brothers is the importer, O&J wines is the store (never heard of this one).

Is Sam’s still the biggest retail outfit in the country?

Costco

So when is the grand opening of Posnucci Fine Wines first store in Chicago?

MariNer, sounds better, no?

My suggested business model:

Offer weekly blind tastings of Spanish, Aussie and Argentinean wines rated 95+. Then, instead of pre-arrival sales, you allow your customers to sell them short.

Bad idea!

A certain somebody once warned me (in response to problems with delivery of 2005 BDX futures) of troubles in the way Sam’s was currently operated and I took it so seriously I canceled all my (much delayed) orders. Seeing this makes me relieved I did.

Thanks!

Chris

As Senor Posnor said, Costco is #1. Believe Trader Joe’s is #2.

For wine, that is.
