Stayed at Muir in Halifax over XMas. Great if you have a little Marriott status to upgrade. They ran a special with Chase points over the holidays so it was quite affordable otherwise can be a bit pricey. Very near the waterfront and not far from the rest of downtown by foot.
Others stayed at Sutton House which is near the convention center. Closer to more city stuff but decidedly more raucous based on their feedback.
I found Sutton House nice enough but unremarkable (i.e., not a place that I was interested in spending any more time than needed in). That central area and waterfront is all pretty small so assuming you’re staying there I’d perhaps worry less about location than the hotel you’re most comfortable in.
