Safeway 30% off wine sale

Safeway is running their periodic 30% off sale, plus an additional 10% (net 37% discount) if you buy six bottles. The regular prices are somewhat inflated so it’s not a real fire sale, but pretty good. Anyone in Safeway-land pick up anything interesting?

I went in on the first day specifically to pick up some 2009 Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin a Vent, but someone beat me to it and picked them clean. The wine guy in the store said it would be back in stock today, so I went back and sure enough it was. He had even put aside a six-pack for me, despite not having my name. Nice.

This is really a classy wine for the price (I paid $20 early this year but this sale price is about $15).

They also have Ridge Geyserville for $25 - tempting.

The Ridge would be a killer deal at that price. I never shop at Safeway, but should probably stop in.

Some locals have touted finding various Ridge bottles for great prices at these sales. Thanks for the heads up.

I found the 07 Dutton-Goldfield Freestone Hill Pinot for $29.

Safeway in Fairfax, VA is doing 20% off on six-packs. Their suggested prices are outrageous to begin with. I found the “deals” after all discounts were still higher than wine-searcher.

I got some '08 Geyserville (I thought closer to $24), some '08 Gary Farrell RRV chardonnay (upper 20s) and some '07 Guigal Cotes du Rhone (about $11). Had some of the Ridge already - dark & voluptuously rustic.

And it brings educated guess down to 15 bucks.
I didn’t see much there that competes with Costco’s regular prices. But I didn’t think to look for gamay at my safeway to be honest.

I wa up in the bay area last week for the USC / CAL game and stopped into the Safeway in Danville by my buddy’s house and I was blown away by the selection there.

Their selection rivaled some decent wine shops in LA.

Too bad there wasn’t that sale last weekend. I would’ve liked to get a beter deal on the 2 Ghost Block Cabs I picked up.

There is a pretty decent selection of California wines at the Safeway near me. Picked up the '09 Educated Guess @ $13.50, '08 Ridge Geyserville @$25, and '08 Ridge Lytton @ $25.

BTW, this is also good at Vons and Pavilions, which are owned by Safeway.

Sadly does not seem to bee good at Dominick’s (Illinois), also owned by Safeway.

What am I missing? Seems like WA state did their sale back in August?

I stopped by the Sonoma Safeway today and spotted the 2007 Mount Eden Saratoga Cuvee Chardonnay @ $16.06… Has anyone had this? Where in the richness-to-lean spectrum does this fall?

…or the Qupe Bien Nacido ‘Y Block’ Chardonnay?

Um… It’s $16… Try one

I stopped in yesterday for a look-see (Never shop at Safeway) and found it to be similar to the BevMo 1¢ sale where they inflate the price to make the discount less of an impact on their bottom line.
Example - 2009 Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel - Retail $28.95? The 6 pack price was $19.50. The prices at the 6-pack rate were similar to every day pricing at Bottle Barn. And besides, Bottle Barn has far more wines I would consider buying than Safeway anyhow so my habits will not change.

$16 when you buy a sixer…

$18 on this side of the county… neener

neener neener

No fair comparing it to the Bottle Barn…I love that place and enjoy stopping in now and then when we visit my wife’s family in SR.

…but you can fill out your 6-pack with $24 Ridge SVDs.

Our Safeway is a “Premium” store with a large temp controlled walk-in wine cellar, but there’s little there to get excited about. They have an '04 Beaucastel at $119 that seems like it’s been there (and probably will be there) forever. For a reference point, Guigal CdR finds its way up to $18 for this sale, so after 37% off it’s basically on par with K&L’s everyday price.

That said, the afore-mentioned Ridges are a steal, and that’s pretty much what we fill up on. They’ve also got some MacRostie Wildcat Mtn Syrah & Pinot that are pretty good, and in the Spring it can be a good event to stock up on Summer QPR whites.
