Rotterdam

My wife and I will be spending some time in Amsterdam this fall, and are pondering a day trip to Rotterdam.

Would love any suggestions for restaurants, cafes, wine shops, and of course any general suggestions.

Thanks!

In true Berserker style… I’m going to read your initial post and then completely fail to answer it, but instead give you another consideration. AMS to Brussels is <2 hrs on Eurostar (formerly Thalys). If you’re a beer nut (Cantillon, etc) or want to notch BE on the country list, definitely something else to consider

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve actually been to Brussels before (during my beer-serker days), but otherwise would be a great option.

Been ages since i’ve been there, but while living in Amsterdam, Lux was the more respected. In the NL the michelin guide has long been a joke in terms of who actually gets the star, so i’m not too familiar with the other Michelin picks of the town.

Still some nice bottles on the list, if you don’t like low-intervention wines.

Cafes here; https://europeancoffeetrip.com/rotterdam/

In terms of buying wine in NL — it’s not the easiest or the best selection. If you’d tell me who you’re interested in i could check if there’s a distributor and a lead to where it’s being sold. PM me if you want.

We actually have a couple of really good wine spots in Rotterdam:

  • NOTK - Place where wine leads the food, very good (albeit not cheap) wine list. They are newly located at the cosy Deliplein at the Kop van Zuid
  • Vineum - Very good wine list (the owner is a well known importer too) and bib gourmand Michelin restaurant
  • Café Kiem - Excellent wine list in a very easy going setting
  • Fitzgerald - Used to have the best wine list in Rotterdam, I’ve not been there since they have a new owner
  • Joelia - Michelin star restaurant with a great wine cellar. Located in the Hilton
  • Fred - Michelin two star restaurant with a very good wine cellar (pricy though)

I really like the restaurant Dertien. It focuses on local ingredients but not wine. Heroine does great multi-course meals but is not the greatest with wine pairing. My favorite spot to hang out in the afternoon is the Deliplein, getting coffee and a sandwich from either Kopi Soesoe or Jordys (one of a number that have popped up in the last decade.) If you do go to the Deliplein, don’t forget to stop by the Soda Pop Shop for an inventive mixed drink with or without alcohol. They are located at the Fenix, which has a superb view of the harbor.

PS: Rotterdam is a great cycling town; you don’t have the insane tourist biking hoards as in Amsterdam. A 10-15 minute ride gets you to the Delfshaven neighborhood, one of the few to escape the firestorm of 1940. You can take a lovely walk unfettered by tourist hoards and enjoy a nice beer at brouwerij De Pelgrem or coffee/ lunch across the canal at Altstadt Rotterdam.
If you plan a couple of days in Rotterdam, the 10K ride to Delft along the Delfhavense Schie is gorgeous. All flat.
