We are very excited to be back for Berserker Day 16! We are thrilled to be able to offer two wines from the best vintage we have ever experienced, 2023!
Many thanks to Todd and the crew for all they do. (Todd put me here as we have very limited quantities available, and last time we sold out on Preview Day…so Monopole gets the opportunity!)
Riverain focuses on single vineyard wines from great sources and for this offer those are our Oakville Tench Vineyard Cabernet, Pinot Noir from Silver Eagle Vineyard in Occidental and Sauvignon Blanc from the Gamble Vineyard in Yountville.
We owe much to Thomas Rivers Brown and his team as they are constantly watching every detail to make better and better wine. While we our known for our Tench Vineyard Cabernet, our limited production Silver Eagle Pinot Noir often steals the show.
Simply put, 2023 is the best vintage we have ever had at Riverain. The Cabernet, Pinot and SB are all best of class and we are thrilled to have these. The long cool growing season, with no heat spikes, and late pick dates made for concentrated, deep beautifully balanced wines. Yields were medium plus and the quality reminds me of 2016, with an extra layer of complexity and density.
We hope you like the package options and feel free to email me at steve@riverainvineyards.com with any questions.
The wines:
2023 Oakville Cabernet, Tench Vineyard - Our flagship in a a truly great vintage. 3 different barrel tastings confirmed this is a fantastic, deep, complex cabernet from a wonderful growing season. A powerful and concentrated vintage, but with unsurpassed lusciousness and balance. 2023 had cooler, even weather without many surprises. No big heat spikes, no major cold spells and a late harvest. A perfect crop. Thomas told me he had not seen such a year where the harvested fruit from all of his projects looked so healthy and the quality across the board in 2023 is superb. Inky dark color, blackberry, cassis and a super long finish, there is a hint of black cherry on the end to provide balance to the purple fruit. Tench Vineyard’s location in Eastern Oakville always provide a bit of extra acidity that keeps the wine fresh. As is the tradition, this is mostly Darnajou, Taransaud and Baron cooperage, 75% new. The addition of Remond barrels this year added additional depth and purity (my favorite of the four). Decant for early drinking, but this should easily go 20+ years.
PLEASE NOTE THE CABERNET WILL SHIP FALL OF 2025.
2023 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard - Our fifth vintage, its predecessors all exceeded my expectations, but the 2023 is the best of the five. The Occidental area (and Silver Eagle vineyard specifically) seems to provide bright acids, plum, cherry, and touches of cranberry and mint (likely from the cool, long growing season). An average sized crop allowed this to fully ripen. This is primarily 828 clone and a bit of Swan clone, which distinguishes it from the RM bottling. It was also fermented with 25% whole cluster for aromatic complexity. Just 6 barrels, of which two were new French Oak. As befits the cooler year, this may take a year or two to unwind, but drinks very well with a short decant. Like the RM bottling, this will age for much longer than might be expected.
PLEASE NOTE THE PINOT NOIR WILL SHIP SOON, WEATHER PERMITTING
