Peace to his family and friends.
Thatās horrible news. How awful. What a loss. When I subscribed to Vinous we had great chats about wine but also music, since he liked much of the same stuff as me. He introduced me to lots of Beaujolais producers Iād never heard of. Seemed like such a nice man. Iām gobsmacked.
Saw him for dinner last month. He was in good spirits and, as usual, could talk endlessly about anything and everything. What a loss, both professionally and personally for those who knew him. RIP.
I am very sad to read about this. I used to buy wine from Josh years ago when he worked for David Schildknecht in DC. RIP.
Plain Old Pearsonās. My dad used to take me with him shopping there. Legendary.
I was jealous when I saw those pictures and made a mental note to make sure to see him next time I was in NY. Damn. A terrible loss for the community.
Yes. I often would order wines from David, talking with him about what I should buy. But, when the wines came in, they would be at a warehouse. I quickly learned that when I asked David to get the wine to the store so I could pick it up on the way home from work, often he would forget and the wine would not be there. I learned to ask Josh to get the wine to the store and he always got it there. He seemed so young in those days (late 1980s and early 1990s). Life passes too fast.
The guy was an encyclopedia of all things food and drink. Iāll miss our conversations. Sad day.
So sad, Josh was a tremendous reviewer and a great person to spend an afternoon with. As noted already, an absolute encyclopedia of wine, and many other things.
Such sad news. Way too young.
Rest in peace Josh.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Josh, but hold his work in the highest esteem. Condolences to his family, friends, and many followers.
Cheers,
Hal
shocking. RIP Josh
How terribly sad. RIP
This hurt me so much to hear this. Fuck. Just FUCK. Sorry, R.I.P. Josh, condolences to his wife and daughters.
iām speechless. rest in peace.
Josh was incredibly special⦠https://claricewinecompany.com/on-a-friendship-between-a-wine-writer-and-a-winemaker/
Preach I am just gobsmacked.
Josh was a treasure. Such a great guy and so humble considering his skill set. He really deserved much more attention and many more accolades than he got, but that never bothered him. I always found him willing to share, teach, have fun, and just plain enjoy life. Amongst critics, his palate is the best I have personally encountered in my lifetime so far. I ache for his family, friends, the wine world, and the world at large. We lost a good one far too soon.
He was a friend of mine for over twenty years. I just found out and my skull wonāt stop tingling in shock. After that dinner in December, he and I went out to a dive bar into the wee hours. I put him into a taxi to Penn Station around 2 in the morning, and thatās the last time I saw himā¦. Heart broken.
Here he is chatting and laughing with you, Paul, off camera to my left.
