Right Bank Producers Stylistically Similar To Magdelaine

Hey folks! Looking for recommendations here. Just recently had the 1994, 1998, 2008 and 2011. I’m hooked. Who else is stylistically similar to Magdelaine?
Thanks!

@Mark_Golodetz and @Robert.A.Jr are big fans of Magdelaine. They may chime in and give you some help here.

Chiming in.

Magdelaine is unique, and it’s hard to think of alternatives, particularly now with climate change. Of the alternatives I can mention, all of them are considerably more expensive than Magdelaine, so I think you are best served just looking for back vintages.

Mostly available in Europe, I will PM you a couple of merchants whom I have worked with. I personally have enough now, so no longer in competition with you.

Your the man, thank you! I just sourced some cases from MMD and they were absolutely sound in every way. I wasn’t expecting much from the 1994. It was amazing. Zero tertiary and minimal secondary aromas. I’m going back to the well!!!

I did this tasting a couple of years ago. Might help.

Yes, I’ve read that a few times. Gold!!!

Sadly, you’re right - Magdelaine is in a class of its own today apart from the super-expensive wines you list.

They’re not quite like Magdelaine, but the one or two I have had have impressed me: Meylet and Corbin Michotte. The former was recommended by Keith Levenberg, the latter by Robert Alfert - both wines are made in a fresher, Loire-like style, light years from the syrupy stuff.

Tough request in this new era!

While not the same level of Magdelaine, I am a fan of Chateau Corbin Michotte. I have not had any 2015 to current, however.

While Magdelaine has developed a cult following, it still comes up for sale with some regularity and the prices aren’t insane. A search of my email shows 7 Magdelaine offers from Envoyer in 2024 alone. So just keep your eyes open.

I bought a couple of 1998s for USD 100 apiece here in Norway (auction this winter)

That’s a steal!!! Excellent vintage of Magdelaine.

I’ve been grabbing 2008s for a little over $100. From what little I’ve tasted from Magdelaine, the 2008s are super strong.

Magdelaine is still pretty easy to find in Europe through WS.

I had a very goos 1986 not long ago. Cost me 64€… some vintages are 100+. But it is certainly possible to source.

When I have the money for it I am certainly going to try some newer vintages (I had 1979 and 1986 so far).

For you Euros with perhaps better access, I recommend the following vintages:

2011 - the last of a classic
2008
2005 - time will tell but truly special
2000 - lovely, just entering it’s window
1998 - a wow wine
1995 - give it a few more years
1990 - wide open and delish
1989
1985 - a wow wine
1982 - truly special
1979
1970
1966 - the wine that hooked me to this glorious Chateau

I had the 2000 on Monday, it’s really entering a really lovely drinking window. Another outstanding Magdelaine.

Thanks Robert. I will save that list for when I go hunting!

1994 Magdelaine is awesome. I think it has been posted before

Those are the vintages that I would buy again and again and again given the right pricing. But that is not to say that other vintages that I did not list or not worth buying. For example, I was more than happy drinking 99, 01, 04 and even 07! One of the things that makes this château so special is that it typically made wines, really good wines, in less exalted vintages, again like 2007

Otherwise come by
I have about 20 vintages. 1970-2010
Never had a not great Magdelaine

1999 sounded a bit weak from CT. It is available rather cheap… maybe I should give it a go.

We can probably figure something out
