Returning rental car 4 hours early

I changed my return flight to leave 4 hours earlier than I originally booked. Do I need to modify my rental car rez to reflect the earlier drop off time, or can I leave it as it is?

I’m renting with Avis if that matters. Sometimes the rental car companies get a little weird with their rental policies. Thanks.

Never had an issue with an early return as long as the rental office is open.

I usually use enterprise. So if that experience is the same, you will have no problems, but you will pay for the full day.

Earlier drop off has been fine with Avis, but don’t expect a refund.

Nope, early is fine.

They’ve really got you twisted in knots, lol. Which I understand, but nothing to worry about :wine_glass:

I use only Hertz & Avis when traveling (US, France, Spain & Italy mainly); and sometimes return hours early. Never had any problem doing that. Come to think of it, I’ve never been offered or given a discount or rebate for doing so either (not that I ever asked for or expected one).

I return days early often…never an issue. As others have stated you won’t get any money back

As long as you don’t rent from Hertz you should be ok.

Hertz customers get sent to jail (innocent of any crime), I never would rent from them.

I rented from Hertz earlier this year for the first time in a while. What a nightmare.

When I check in, the said I owed an amount close to the full reservation amount even though I pre-paid. After going back and forth for a long time, they determined it was because I was 10 minutes early for my reservation and it meant I would get charged for an extra day. They couldn’t explain why that would create a charge for 4 days. Since I knew that I used an Amex Platinum and that allowed me to return up to four hours late for free, I said just change my return time to 30 minutes earlier which worked.

Get to the car which has a number of dents and scratches. Take pictures, wait back in line (there was no gold counter at this location) and fill out forms before I can leave.

Upon return, we were two hours past the return time but well within the Amex Platinum window. Attendant comes over and says all good, we emailed you the receipt. Once we got home, I see that they charged me for an extra day for the late return. Took a very long phone call to get the refund.

Before I retired, I was a very loyal Hertz customer for all my business and personal travel. After this experience, I can’t imagine renting from Hertz the next time.

From my experience, no.

Wow, I have only had good experiences with Hertz. You all are scaring me!

Hertz went way, way, way downhill during and after the pandemic. Declared bankruptcy. Sold off a large portion of their fleet. Now selling off their Tesla fleet. What is left is older cars with more miles and wear on them. They’ve been slow to replenish the fleet as well.

Enterprise eats their lunch.

Read the stories that I linked. Many stories of renters unfairly jailed.

I’d never rent from them.
