Retailer Check: New York Wine Warehouse?

Anybody know this outfit?

A few things I’m interested in, but to be honest, never heard of these folks before.
Thanks in advance.

If it is the lower Manhattan broadway store it is the home where off vintage wines go to die or at least be bought by a gambler. Not very good storage conditions either.

I’ve done a fair amount of business with them, as they often have hard to get good Burgs, and have always had very friendly service and excellent resuilts! No “off vintages” there!

They’re in Long Island City, just over the 59th Street Bridge. I’ve stored my wine with their affiliate, New York Wine Storage, for 18 years and have bought wines from them on a number of occasions. They do gray market importing so the prices are often excellent, and the storage is second to none since the retail arm is just a sideline to their temperature control warehouse. Geoff Troy, the proprietor, is a good, reliable guy.

Ask for Geoffrey. Amazing cool storage in an old late 19th-early 20th century brick factory building. Great prices. Website is mostly accurate. I think they also do some email blasts if you get on their list for pre-arrivals.

This is Warehouse Wine and Spirits near Astor Place - I’ve had a few good deals but have had more bad bottles here than anywhere else. There’s a reason the prices are so cheap - what’s the deal with this place?

Pass on the wine. Some of the best spirits prices in the city, particularly with the small batch Bourbons and Single Malt Scotches and other rare Cognacs, rums, etc.

Yep. This is the deal.
Thanks for all the comments!

What is gray market importing?

It means importing wines in competition with a U.S. importer with whom the winery has a contract for exclusive U.S. rights. Lots of people do it now, including Premier Cru and Zachy’s.

It’s perfectly legal to buy the wine on the secondary market and import it. The contract only binds the winery, not other people in the supply chain. And sometimes winemakers sell behind the back of their exclusive importer.
