I wouldn’t call myself new to wine but Burgundy is a bit overwhelming! We are taking a trip to Burgundy (and Champagne) in October and I would love to do a deep dive into the region and it’s wines to learn more as I find I enjoy tastings more when I have a good baseline knowledge. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos on the basics but would love recommendations for books or videos/YouTube channels to do a deeper dive into individual appellations, vineyards, and producers.
Jasper morris inside burgundy 2nd edition is probably the most definitive guide.
Burgundy can definitely feel overwhelming with all its appellations and producers. A few well-regarded resources for a deeper dive include books that focus on vineyard-level detail and YouTube channels by sommeliers who explain terroir and producer differences. The discussion here provides several suggestions that helped me prepare for tastings and trips, making the experience much richer.
Thank you! Any favorite books (just ordered Inside Burgundy) and YouTube channels? So far most of the YouTube channels I’ve found just give a cursory overview of the region and lack the in depth detail I’m looking for. We did also buy several village level burgundies from some of the major Cote De Nuits appellations to help our research!
Terroir by James Wilson: If you want to understand why one side of a path produces Grand Cru and the other only Village-level wine, this book explains the complex Jurassic limestone geology of the region.
For Youtube channels, these might help you:
Burgundy Wine School (Jean-Pierre Renard): A 16-part masterclass series that provides academic-level detail on appellation structures and regional nuances.
Wine With Jimmy: Targeted at WSET Diploma students, his videos provide high-level technical information on viticulture and production.
Thanks so much! Super helpful recs!
There are great threads here on Burgundy. Look at Hall of Fame threads. Also, subscribe to the Wine Advocate. William Kelley who writes about Burgundy there and often posts here is truly fabulous.
Look at the Travel board here for great recommendations on restaurants in Burgundy.
When you go to Champagne, visit Taittinger and Ruinart in Reims. Great visits.
Thanks for the recs! Will try to find some of the Hall of fame posts. Have already taken some notes on restaurants from prior posts!
We went to Taittinger last year when we did about a week in champagne and really enjoyed it! Fave experience was Selosse (he disgorged a bottle for us!) followed by Henri Giraud and Lermandier Bernier!
