Red wine stain removal: methods that actually work (carpet, clothes, upholstery)

I just spilled a full glass of Bordeaux all over our couch and carpet. The wine is still wet, and my wife… let’s just say she’s not happy.

What’s your best trick for getting a red wine stain out of fabric? :grimacing:

Is it too late to flip the cushions?

There are dozens of fabric colors named after wine. I believe my Lay-Z-Boy is even called Bordeaux. I recommend getting some of those.

Trip to a furniture store and to Lowe’s for new carpet.

Broke a Shiraz in my bag flying to US from Australia. My wife used dawn dishwashing liquid to blot every drop from all of my clothes. Worked like a charm. No sign of wine.

Wine Away worked well, but it’s been quite a while

I bet the Alfert home has some experience with this . . . .

Put a lot of table salt on the carpet stain and let sit for an hour, then vacuum. Not sure about the couch.

My best advice is to soak up every single drop you can using paper towel…even if it takes a full roll. Blot at it, don’t rub it around. Then begin to clean. something like Oxyclean or a pet stain removal product should work well.

Wise words. Our trick involves table salt and seltzer water. Witnessed a too full glass of Pinot on a white sofa disappear.

I hope the couch dries before you lay your blanket and pillow there.

We use Wine Away in the tasting room. Customer dropped a glass of cab on one of our light fabric chairs. Took a few applications, but it removed the whole stain.

And throw a lively wine party before you do this

Good luck. If that doesn’t work, try equal parts liquid Dawn dish detergent and peroxide (let sit on the stained area for 15-30 minute and rinse with water. I have used this on drops on our carpet but have not used it on furniture.

Use a hair blow dryer to dry the area quickly on furniture. If you let it air dry, a water ring stain will form on the fabric.

Another reason to drink White Burg. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Miss Mouth’s Messy Eater Stain Treater

No I didn’t just make that up. It’s a real product designed for removing berry stains from kids clothing and I swear to god it’s the closest thing to magic. Works on wine stains too. The craziest thing is you literally spray this stuff on the clothing and the stain just disappears right before your eyes. I laugh every time I use it and I’ve demonstrated it to friends who are always just as skeptical as I was when I tried it the first time.

If that isn’t a glowing endorsement I don’t know what is!

If you can get past the kid-themed branding :joy:, this thing is the best red wine stain remover on the market.

Hydrogen peroxide and dish detergent or laundry detergent. Rub well with the detergent and then rinse with H2O2. I spilled a glass on a pale beige carpet in an apartment I was renting. Huge spill mess. But I got it all out and they didn’t charge me a cleaning fee. The only thing I would suggest is that you try a little of the H2O2 in an inconspicuous area first, just to make sure it won’t bleach or alter the color of the fabric. And also you may want to get some spray guard for your furniture.
