Recommendations to buy US wine in the EU

Hoping for a little help from any EU-based Berserkers or knowledgeable folks otherwise.

Am hosting a big dinner (30pax) in Spain in around a month, and was hoping to showcase some US wines during the dinner. I have been searching online a bit but can’t find a great online retailer with a nice selection of “off the beaten path” wines from the States.

Best I have found is Millesima, but they generally carry higher end bottles that are going to hurt quite a bit if serving wine for so many people. My ingoing aspiration was to serve 2 or 3 different wines (prob half a case of each) and complement with some Spanish staples.

Curious to hear what your go-to retailers are for wine in Europe!

I’m not surprised it’s been difficult.

Apart from supermarket cheapies, you’ll typically just see occasional bottles on good merchant’s lists e.g. Ridge, Au Bon Climat, …

There have been occasional specialists in the UK, and that’s probably your best chance, if any are still going.

Try Vila Viniteca. Maybe Lavinia.

It’s not easy. Even our friends who own or run major restaurants in Spain rarely have access to what you are looking for.

Have you tried Decantelo? Not sure if they have the kind of US wines that might interest you, but they do offer some. They even have an AI type of chat that you can interact with o come up with possibilities. Good luck.

The U.K. has several good options. I’m sure the best is still Roberson Wine Merchants if you’re looking for well-priced interesting wines and not blue chip investor wines. A quick look at their website shows plenty of interesting options in the 20-30 pound range from interesting producers.

No idea how hard it is to ship wines from the U.K. to Spain post-Brexit.

No help for next month, but if you want to do something next year I’d be happy to mule over some bottles when we come to Spain in April.

That’s probably your best bet, find someone coming over, or back, from the U.S., who can bring some wines for you.

A&B in London carries a nice selection of Oregon, including many discussed on this board (Goodfellow, Walter Scott, etc.). They may carry other stuff.

In Beaune.

I’ve had good luck buying American wines to gift to French growers whose wines I sell. List constantly changing and not necessarily completely up to date. Call and discuss.

I can’t believe I spaced on Decantalo… they have a good set of moderately priced options which should be representative of the US, like a Cali Albariño which should be an interesting side by side

Unfortunately delivery is UK only, but saved for any future needs. Their selection is exactly the style I was looking for.

Thank you! Will definitely take a few bottles over myself, just a bit tough to do with higher volumes

Unfortunately no EU delivery but wow they have a great selection at decent prices

Awesome, thanks for the tip

Thank you!!

Try this: www.californianwines.eu

They are in the Czech Republic, so take that into account regarding shipping if the weather is too hot.

I have used them. They are reliable and they have a good selection of wines with an unbeatable shipping charge policy (free from 250 euro).

Good luck with your dinner!

Unger and Schreiblehner of Germany, both good addresses with a good range of self imported wines.
