Being “the wine guy,” I was asked for recommendations on what wines to buy for a bat mitzvah of my marketing director’s daughter. I suggested Borsao for the red because it is always a crowd pleaser and Freixenet for a bubbly for mimosas because it will not break the bank, but I have no clue on a comparably-priced white that is worth drinking. Every time I try to find one, I hate it. Any ideas?
That’s a brilliant call. Just make sure not to get the 2015 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet without tasting it first. I had a lone bottle in August and it was shrill.
Based on the other two wines, I’d go with an oaky Chardonnay. Pepiere Muscadet is an excellent call, and the one I’d want to drink, but it’s a little to esoteric for the GenPop.
Drank 2014 sartarelli verdicchio dei castelli di jesi the other night and it was terrific both on its own and with food (ok they probably won’t be serving wood oven roasted octopus salad but the wine is flexible - and still available under $15/
+2 If you can find it (it seems to be going fast). It’s a perfect example of a crowd pleaser that also has something for those who are paying attention.
