We’re in Pasadena visiting our daughter and will have Xmas dinner at this restaurant. I’m not very familiar with South American wine. We like many types of red wine and tend toward old world styles, but open to any recommendation. Looking for any that would stand out for you, and why. Thanks!
Lots of cool things on that list. Catena is great but we drink that Teho here and it’s fine and way cheaper.
If you’re springing that Montes Syrah is terrific as is the Tapiz Merlot.
We went to that restaurant a few years back and found the food and wine underwhelming in the extreme but if forced I’d probably choose the gualeterry.
I had the Zaha Cab Franc recently at a Cab Franc blind tasting and guessed that it could be from a Loire producer with whom I was unfamiliar. I’d happily drink it again.
Catena Zapata Nicasia. Great vineyard and producer.
Thanks everyone! We drank the Catena Zapata Nicasia and enjoyed it a lot. It seemed to be pretty fairly priced for a restaurant list too.
How was the food?
Food was mixed. Appetizers and some of the mains were very good. Some just okay. Desserts were pretty good.
Hi Craig. I’ve been to that restaurant a couple of times. My suggestion is that if you have a chance again, try one of the wines from Salta or Patagonia, as they’re quite different from the more commonly available wines from Mendoza.
And if you are in Pasadena, you might want to try Bacchus on Washington and Hill. Not too far from where you were - just a bit north towards Altadena. He does wine dinners every so often, our friend Larry has brought his Tercero wines a few times, and his wine list is decent and he won’t kill you with corkage if you bring something from your cellar. Plus he’s a good guy and his food is good.
It’s one block from my office. Went once and never again. ![]()
I don’t have extensive experience with Argentinian wines but the Catena Zapata Nicasia does stand out as one of the better Malbecs I have had from Argentina.
Thanks!
