Metrokane Vertical Rabbit Lever Style Corkscrew with Foil Cutter.
Second this. I was given one as a gift 12 years ago and still have it and use it constantly. Nice leather case to boot.
+1, love mine. Would prefer a non-serrated foil knife if that’s an option, but otherwise this is the classic.

I have an olive wood one and it is ingraved with “Steakmaster”. XMAS gift two years ago.
I own both, but prefer the Thiers Sommelier over Laguiole.

check out the new pulltap toledo - very cool, perhaps not quite as stylish as the lagioule, but maybe more functional with the two step…
+3. The horn handled examples are beautiful. I have several.
My choice s well for young wines. Quick, easy, works on all cork types.

Laguiole of course. But if it is a gift and the recipient is not a geek, they might appreciate
a rabbit type device more than the “waiter’s style” device.
Depending on how much you want to spend, I think the Screwpull is top of the line:

Had mine for more than 12 years and have only replaced the worm a couple times and the capsule cutter once or twice.
Can’t mess with a classic:

I say, stick with the classic - the vintage French Zig Zag.
We’ve had ours for years - it’s classic and it works like a charm.

I don’t know if it’s giftworthy but this one is my favorite and the only one I’ve actually bought twice. http://www.amazon.com/Screwpull-508140010-Waiter-Style-Corkscrew/dp/B000GA311Y/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1284779377&sr=8-5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The extra joint is key.
Bought this “cheaper” version Laguiole in St. Emillion 7 years ago and it has done its job - 2000+ bottles opened but am ready for an upgrade that will last the rest of my life. I think I paid around $30 but finally wore out. Have received at least 10 “rabbit” style openers and have re gifted or thrown away. I guess I am a traditionalist, love the exercise I get with this type.
Best place to shop?
Pulltap is the best corkscrew. The Laguiole is the best gift.
