Recent red burgundy vintage experiences

You’ll give your final judgement three year after the vintage??

Final judgment on whether I’m going to buy the wines. I don’t buy EP.

17s are drinking great right now, even at the top level.

2017 Rousseau Chambertin

There had been some chatter about Trapet’s Chambertin approaching the quality of Rousseau’s in recent years. At least tonight, with these wines, it wasn’t even close. The Rousseau exploded from the glass with incredible pure crunchy red fruits and deep rich loam. The palate was equally beautiful with such transparency, lightness, and beautiful filigreed texture. The finish was so long and lovely. This wine was just firing on all possible cylinders and you are always happy to catch wines in such a good place. Sure, it has a long life ahead of it and will get more complex in time, but it’s wonderful now.

2017 Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin 1er Clos Saint Jacques

Absolutely stunning with beautiful aromatics of sappy red cherries and soft loam with some warming spices and just a hint of vanilla. The palate had more beautiful fruits, with great elegance and texture and the finish hit hard and lasted what seemed like an eternity. This wasn’t quite as wide open as some 17s but is starting to hit its stride.

2017 Roumier Bonnes Mares

This was pretty open and charming, as 17s tend to be, and had beautiful black currant fruit on the nose. The palate was still a bit structured with more currants and zingy acidity. The finish was long and pleasant.

2017 Jean Marc Millot Vosne Romanee 1er Les Suchots

Absolutely stunning wine. Bouquet had lovely violets and red currant fruit, super pure and transparent. Almost weightless on the palate with lithe acidity, beautiful pure fruits and texture that effortless made its way to a super long and languorous finish.

I’ve also tasted the ‘17 Bruno Clair Clos St Jacques and a ‘17 Lignier MSD Premier Cru recently. Both drinking really well.

2017 Hubert Lignier Morey St Denis Vielles Vignes 1er

Unlike some of the echezeaux from the night before this was firing on all cylinders. Black currants, plums, and soft forest floor on the nose. Palate was plush with more fruits and good acidity, finish was long. Perfect pairing with the duck.

Indeed that’s the definition of heterogeneous. :innocent:

Michael, how do you get your Millot wines? Seems like they are hardly ever offered here by retailers. Once I spotted 2 bottles of 2010 Echezeaux at Benchmark and I grabbed them both, but it seems like you just can never find any of it for sale?

Thewineclub and thatchers sell them pretty regularly. So does envoyer.

Btw Millot wines significantly improved after 2014 after Alix took over winemaking.

Wine.com has had the 2022 Echezeaux but it was a bit high at $299.99. They just put it on sale and I think there’s a coupon floating around so could probably knock a little more off. Thought about getting a couple more.

Winebid has a couple 2018 Les Suchots depending on how one feels about that vintage.

The best place to get Millot, especially the grand ech, is this place in Cincinnati called jungle Jim’s.

I think prices have ticked up a bit but there were a lot of bottles of the grand ech for <400 before.

That place doesn’t ship though right?

Also, have you ever tasted that Dessus Cuvée 1949?

Correct, you’ll have to get a local to ship to you. I have, it’s not worth it. I’m honestly not a huge fan of the ech at all; I think the GE is MUCH better, and prefer the clos vougeot and suchots to the ech.

Whoooah! You’re not bullshitting. How could this be? That this random place has so many Millots that no one in NY or Sf has?

It’s not exactly a random place, it’s one of the largest specialty grocery stores in the US. They have huge wine cellars at both of their stores. They’ve sometimes had good deals on drc and Rousseau also.

My only experience was that 2007 Ech I opened a few months ago that everyone said looked heat damaged because of the color. I really loved that bottle and it started me down this path to explore the region more. I’m looking forward to trying the other wines and the newer vintages since Alix took over.
