Recent red burgundy vintage experiences

2005 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieille Vigne.

Ok this one kind of surprised me. Yes, 2005 was an excellent vintage. But a 20 year old village Gevrey shouldn’t be this good. Excellent balance and depth, resonant and long, a bit of structure but snappy with duck confit (L’Ardoise for ye San Franciscans - a genuine French bistro). Delicious tart cherry and cranberry with some field spices, and a lovely nose dancing between strawberry, cherry and cranberry. My first bottle, glad I have a few more. 92

For the 2005 Burg doubters and haters, sip something nice and meditate on patience. The village wines are excellent now, and the rest will come around.

05s are extremely tough. Volnay isn’t a typical Burgundy commune TBH.

Opened this last night PnP. This was singing right out the gate, and was way better than the 2017 that I tried last year. Had a nice weight to it that felt complete compared to the 2017. Really enjoyable wine, I wonder what the percentage of whole cluster is because it tasted very stemmy, but I enjoy that type of taste. Still a very tannic wine and has the bones to go another 10 years.

I think those wines are pretty underrated; nice expression of chambolle.

This was fantastic. Really enjoyed. Was worried it was going to be tired but it was in great shape. Was killer with duck.

Not sure provenance on that bottle but it looks oddly pale for the age. I might say it looks a bit heat affected. :man_shrugging:

Millot tends to be pretty light bodied

Yeah but I’ve had their Ech and it’s not brown like that. That looks quite a bit older than 07 to me.

Not sure what to say. I’ve owned this since release and it’s been stored under temperature control. It was part of a Caveau Selection shipment back when I did that. Only bottle I have so I can’t check on others.
There was nothing wrong with it. Was really lovely. Wife even kept coming back to it.

Echo that.

Of course some wines do develop a more evolved appearance than what their aromas or taste suggest, but in a blind tasting I’d say that the wine is much older than 2007 from the appearance alone. That is not to say the wine doesn’t look how it is supposed to, because I know nothing about it.

At the end of the day if you liked it that’s all that matters!

It tasted more youthful than it looked for sure.

At any rate, I don’t own much Burgundy but it was one of those times when I was like “dang, I wish I had more Burgundy.” I wish I’d bought more years ago so I’d have more ready to drink now

I’m a huge fan of 07.

Is there anything specific you would recommend to a Burgundy novice? Not necessarily from ‘07. Just in general. Been trying to grab things here and there, but a bit in the dark.

I think millot is a great place to start.

This thread is also quite useful, and you can find a lot more wines I’ve had on my instagram.

The 1998s were incredibly pale and light bodied on release. I’m not sure when the winemaking regime changed, though I know @MChang and I discussed it at the Roumier dinner, but if it was after 2007 then that would explain the color of this one at least in part.

2014 was Alix’s first vintage IIRC.

Several 2005’s last night including Forey and Potel Gaudichots, Grivot Beaux Monts, and Tardy Boudots were all in early maturity. The wines were not shut down but also still showing noticeable tannin associated with the 2005 vintage. Some tasters called the wines rustic but I’ll call it a win as I’ve had other recent experiences with 2005 Burgs where the wines were shut down and not as pleasant. The nose on the Grivot was worth the price of admission; classic Vosne perfume and intoxicating. The Gaudichots are supposedly the same wine and tasted similar but I preferred the version raised by Forey.

2008 H-N RSV was the WOTN and also had exotic Vosne perfume, smooth texture, and a core of red fruit. Not at all like other 2008’s and bravo to Charles on making this wine in his first vintage.

Been looking over your feed and poking around online since I had that wine. Burgundy just hits different - on the palate and the wallet.

i snorted. i don’t think i’ve ever come across this phrase before, and it’s perfect. to say nothing of the subtext.
