Anyone come across particular good value wines in restaurant wine lists recently?

best I could come up with in recent memory
1985 Egon Müller, Scharzhofberger, Auslese ($275) in Union square cafe before it relocated
2008 Clos Rougeard, Les poyeaux, ($228 gratuity included) at atera
2009 Weingut Keller, “G-MAX” ($595) at one of Boulud’s restaurants.

We had a dinner last month at the Knife and Fork in Atlantic City, NJ (being in AC is the worst part of this). Wine list was very reasonable. We had a 2012 Rivers Marie Napa cab, wine list price of $96 and then a Ghost Block Cabernet @ $98, these are both $60 wines retail/mailing list. Several others on the list too.

2012 Sojourn Rodgers Creek PN for $49 at a local joint on Tuesday.

They recently ran out, but the Farwood Grill in Orland, CA sold Dom Perignon for under 70 bucks a bottle on half price Tuesdays.

They now have vintage 2002 Cliquot for around 35 bucks on half price Tuesday.

Wow, that’s pretty good. I thought 55 retail for that bottle was good value, 35 at list is great.

I ordered that once. It wasn’t very good.

its no 76 or 71, but Egon 85 was still good when I had it there and also at the modern (more than double the prix)

Last year I was at the Ritz in Naples, Fla. At the hotel restaurant they had the '07 Coche CC for $765. My eyes bugged out of my head! We drank it that night (it was spectacular) and I bought the other remaining bottle they had and brought it home with me. Best QPR I’ve ever seen.

Tuesday Coche 2010 Meursault €220, Wednesday Clos Rougard 2010 €110, today Coche 2008 Cailleret €290. It’s been a good week.

In recent years, I’ve gone through what must be cases of Produttori Barbaresco at my local (good) Italian place, which has it on the list for $38 or something like that.

Over the years I’ve seen many killer deals in the US – mostly at older restaurants that never bothered to update their prices for stuff they purchased years or decades ago. Places like the Broadmoor (93 Drouhin Musigny for $175 a couple years ago), the Inn at Little Washington (e.g., used to have cheap Truchot), Flagstaff House in Boulder ('82 Salon for $160 a few years ago), Old Inn on the Green in the Berkshires, Left Bank in Vail, etc. Pappas in Houston used to be like that but sometime in the last year they’ve jacked up their prices significantly.

Great deals in Europe, too, but those are relatively easy to come by compared with the US.

    Flat out amazing! Had with the 2010 Saumur-Champigny at Passionfish……the Breze is all about exotics and brightness! GC Alsation Riesling meets GC white Burgundy! Pitted orchard fruits…pure and oily, banana wax, yet has a HUGE lemon citrus acid streak to it! Slight petrol, flint strike smokiness……wonderful salinity to the dryness, yet the fruit is creamed up nicely with a little vanilla oak and baked green apples. SO much minerality in this sucker….crushed powdery and savory…with a slight funk. Everything is in perfect balance, yet room to age. I’m in for a case….will watch what happens over the next 20 yrs……oh wait….this wine is IMPOSSIBLE to find! Time to pray… (97 pts.)

    Had with the 2010 Breze at Passionfish….this one decanted for an hour…but in need of many more. Bright and tart red berry fruits……pretty and tight as a you know what…….- Cherry, cranberry, strawberry fruit…with that veggie, bell pepperiness to it…which I really like. Firm and young structure, crunchy minerality….somewhat linear….but there is so much in there! Has a Pinot prettiness to it….with a Barolo structure……faint complexities of leather, dried cherries, flowers, earth, green tobacco………the Breze was the star tonight….but this will be an amazing drink in 10yrs! +pts (93 pts.)
